Brian London-British HW Champ 1958-59 thread

Evidently I did not read the newspaper article that sweet sci posted very closely. It does say that Ingo staggered to his feet at a count of 4 as the bell was ringing.
I thought that both of the articles I quoted implied it that he was still down, though they could have been more clear. Especially the "Boxing Register" saying that Johansson "literally' was saved by the bell. To me that indicates that he was still down.

This makes you want to see the fight even more, especially the last round. Would also be interesting to time it and see if London's claim that the last round was cut short was true.

As a side note, I noticed the article that sweet sci posted also mentioned that Johansson's European title was not on the line. In the "Boxing Encyclopedia" it is listed as a European title fight.

...i've never seen the fight, though i did see a reproduction of a photo which shows johannson on the canvas, looks as if he is out, and the headline over the picture said "Wake up, ingo, you won"

i also recall ingo saying his sister could beat brian london, and a reporter said maybe she could be the opponent in ingo's next fight. ingo was too smart, though...there was no next fight with sis or anyone.


i have a clear memory of brian london fighting flloyd patterson and around the seventh round brian was looking for a soft spot on the canvas. he finally found one and sat down gently so as not to raise any dust from the canvas.

couldn't of been that clear a memory , as London didn't go down till the 11th, but yes he was looking hurt and sorry for himself from around the 7th

As a side note, Ingo was ringside for the Patterson v London fight, and it was watching this that made up his mind he could beat Patterson, as he found him quick but over estimated in the power department.

He should have told Cosell to screw himself on every take. Cosell had a penchant for asking stupid, insulting questions. And I often thought Jim Gray must be related to somebody to keep his job. He asks the dumbest questions and he's the most award interviewer I've ever seen.

The London fight convinced Ingo to retire. His chin was completely gone and he knew it. He took no risks in the London fight and barely survived.
