Wow, what a great piece of history. Gleason was one of the greates entertainers ever, and to hear him talk to Marciano about that Galento incident was priceless.

Galento wasn't a very nice guy, was he? I used to stay in Jersey City sometimes. I don't know where Galento's saloon was or what's there now. Probably someplace near to where I was staying.

Someone said that ESPN Classic once ran every episode of this show. I wonder if they're available online. I'd like to see them. I never even knew that such a show existed until I came upon this.

I think the saloon that Tony Galento owned in the 1930's and 1940's, was located somewhere on Dey street in South Orange NJ.

Tony Galento later built a better tavern then the reported dive he had owned earlier in 1936.
(were he had kept a bear to spar with and on the second floor was they had the gambling room, with the occasional chair flying out a window)
His wife ran the cash register and Tony was the bar keep.

Sometime in the 1950's Tony Galento was the "host" at the Gaslight Club on Jefferson Street in Orange NJ.
I'm not sure if he owned it but he probably did.

Galento's trained at Grouch's Gym in Newark NJ around that time.

Which celeb did Galento knock out? I read about it in a non boxing book but I can't recall off the top of my head. I think it was a film director?

I also read an online article, taken from a book about Galento wrestling an octopus in a tank. One of a kind, you feel.

Brutu- You mentioned the bar "Bayview Tavern" in Bayonne once in another thread which was owned in part by Abe Bressler (Boxing Mgr) or Dom "Ghee" Leico (his trainer). What do you remember about that joint ? Is the building still there do you know ? Briefly, you inferred it might have been a wise guy spot back in the day-am I wrong ?

That incident happened around 1936, a couple of years before Galento fought Louis.
Jackie Gleason was the MC and Bouncer at the Club Miami on Clinton Avenue in Newark NJ.
Part of Jackie Gleason's on stage act was to insult some of the audience members, using lines like,
"Mister,Is that your face or did your pants fall down?"

Galento was once asked why he had wrestled an octopus
(were he had to climb into a huge clear water tank in front of an audience to do it)
"My manager was crazy"
was his reply.

I had the article bookmarked (it was a long passage from a book) but it's not loading. It was a very interesting read.

Cool video of Galento training for his fight with Max Baer - and Max Baer, who was always a comedian, "training" for Galento.

Interviewer: Say, Max, what's gonna happen when you meet Tony Galento?

Max Baer: Ha, I'll moider duh bum!

Here's some rounds from their fight:

Galento's defensive tactics were two pronged:

1. Roundhouse punches

2. His head

I have one of Floyd Patterson's early fights on DVD, the fight was broadcast on Rocky's show.
Phil Silvers was the guest and Rocky, to my surprise, comes across as a very talented entertainer.
