What did everyone make of the undercard? Manage to stay awake?

Danny Williams vs. Gene Simmons

My prediction for Williams - Skelton had been Skelton PTS. It has now changed.

Skelton KO 1

David Barnes vs. Joshua Okine

Right, Barnes is in cruise mode like usual then gets caught. His reaction was bizarre - I thought it was just a mixture of shock and inexperience: his brain was telling him to take the count, but his instinct had told him to get up, which led to the bizarre sit down. For the rest of that round and for the rest of the fight I was very worried for David Barnes. I think he's alright, despite his behaviour sometimes, and said he should be pulled out and sent to hospital about a minute before Jim Watt did. He had 'that' expression on his face, which I'm sure many people will know what I mean. It's an intensely difficult situation to be in - unbeaten fighter, big exposure, big crowd, etc. But I think in retrospect they might have pulled him out a couple rounds before it ended.

Wayne Alexander - Christian Bladt

Wow, what a slugfest. What else with Wayne, though? Played out like so many of his fights before. I think Allegedly should try and get him a big fight, because as he said at the end, he's always gonna struggle at this level. There may well be similar struggles, but at least the potential reward would be far, far greater. The way he fights the risk factor may not even be much higher fighting a top name than it was tonight.

Enzo - Bloke

No surprises there, got the job done well. Loved the way he went to the body after hurting him to the head - shows he's one step closer to getting his masters of the art of finishing. Awesome to see the good relations between him and Johnny, big respect to both of them - both conducted themselves like professional athletes/sportsmen.

He got himself well into it after a shaky looking start. Looked like he was shocked by Wayne's power early, but came back strong and fought well. The punch that put him over was a bomb, and he's got nothing to be ashamed of going over from a shot like that.

Bladt did ok in the fight after a bad start, he just got caught a bit cold by Alexader and it seemed he was in for a tough night, however when he warmed up his sharp counters were having the head static Wayne confused and in trouble at times. It was a great shot that ended the fight but i was rather disappointed as it seemed things were getting interesting with Bladt finding the target with more regularity. There have been a lot of calls to get Alexander a big fight but i fear for him if he was to challenge an elite fighter, he has that massive power but his defence is open and his head movement none existant and i think a quality operator will easily pick him apart. They should aim for someone who is not so offensively threatening like Javier Castillejo but i think he has recently been stripped of the WBC title. The other guys like Kasim Ouma, Roman Karmazin and Travis Simms would all beat Alexander IMO Simms and Ouma are the sleepers in the division and i think they will go on to big things soon.

As for the other fights on the undercard well i thought Danny Williams opponent was a disgrace, a complete mismatch and an insult to the paying public. He came out in a stupid 80's rock star wig and his stance was wide and his approach was novice like, the guy just threw himself forward and held on, none of the knockdown punches really seemed to land clean and this did absolutely nothing for Williams in my eyes, Skelton to stop him in July for me.

Enzo Macarinelli finished his man well but he is too overprotected, let's hope they can make the Nelson fight soon and the winner can face the winner of the Haye-Hobson match which is on SKY by the looks of things. Enzo's opponent was another stiff brought in for record padding and it's time they put someone in front if him with a pulse, it's a shame he is so poorly matched all the time...does his team know something we don't? His latest foes have been abysmal and Macarinelli has shown the potential to be above these constant human punching bags.

Onto David Barnes and i was gutted at the ending as throughout the first four rounds i was reminded why he is one of my favourite fighters at the moment, slick, fast, skillful and picking some good shots. That knockdown was worrying, he was never the same again afterwards, just before Jim Watt picked up on the point i thought to myself there was something drastically wrong and i was worried we might see another Boxing casualty. I'm afraid health issues aside there is something seriously wrong with the lad's head, he doesn't seem to be with it all the time mentally and just fell apart at the seems. I genuinely fear for his Boxing future, i hope he can pull himself together because the ability is there, it was strange watching him fall apart after he dug so deep to grind out a win over Jimmy Vincent when he could have easily wilted and then he disposed effortlessly of James Hare...weird

All in all the undercard was pretty shit i think :P

Apart from Enzo, it was a dissapointing undercard performance from a British perspective. Wayne's punch got him out of trouble again, it was looking a bit desperate at that time. Danny's fight was a complete farce and Barnes lost to a very average fighter.

Lets see Michael Jennings or even Tony Doherty fight for that Commonwealth title - if they are not going to fight Barnes, then I think it is an easy title to win. Barnes was awful after the knockdown, I seriously hope he is okay.

Steve, I agree with you on Wayne Alexander. The thing is, a fight with a high level opponent may be better for him simply because they have the power to take him out earlier. Odd as that sounds, I go along with the commentary team in their view his power would work at the top level (actually proved it against Simon), and that he'd be better off challenging the best in a potential two rounder, than fighting guys below his level and getting caught up in these inevitable, gruelling grinders.

The Danny Williams match was a complete farce. I think its an insult to the paying public to put something like that on anywhere let alone the undercard of such a big fight.

Williams looked like shit, anyone half decent would have knocked that guy out in 60 seconds or less. I really fancy Skelton to beat him.

I'd fancy my chances against that guy Williams fought and I'm about middleweight. ;)

How on earth does he have a winning record? Imagine the stiffs he must have beaten.

As my old man has put on a few pounds since his prime, I always tease him and say "do you fancy your chances against so and so (likes of Audley Harrison, Herbie Hide etc)". His usual response is "as long as it is contracted that they are not allowed to punch".

I said it about this guy and he said a serious "Yes".

Wayne Alexander has always been an exciting fighter to watch particuarly with that KO power but i worry for him, he always looks "on the brink" for some reason. The SKY anlysists made the point that his defences have decreased lately but he was never a good defensive fighter anyway, i was watching an old tape the other day when he fought Paolo Pizzamiglio and his stance was wide and he just went in throwing huge looping hooks from the off set, luckily the Italian folded but his tactics don't help him at all. How many times yesterday did he lean his head in after a lazy jab? At the top level he would get punished for that.

Fair play to Wayne, that was one hell of a punch, and it's not often you see someone land on their face like that.

But I reckon he's going absolutely nowhere. I don't see how he can get a big fight and no real dometic fights to keep him interested.

I thought the Tony Booth fight was entertaining.

The Beast of Bonymaen bout was on a par with Enzo's. Enzo's opponent had, what, a day's notice?

Fundamentally that was a rubbish, rubbish undercard, with the exception of the Barnes fight which after the bobbing turds and prolonged intervals before it I actually enjoyed. But most people weren't paying for the undercard, were they?

I fail to see how Williams can now be written off against Skelton because of his performance on Saturday. That wasn't even a fight for christs sake.

Because the klitschko beating has clearly ruined him.

No timing, no combinations, no clue, he should have dismantled this guy in the same way he did Shawn Robinson, only easier.

Danny needs to retire. He could get badly hurt even against a crude mauler like skelton.

Antoine Palatis is a good example, after that fight I wouldn't have put Danny anywhere near beating Tyson or a world title shot.

so it's only me that thinks danny is over?

there's a difference between a guy not interested and one fundamentally unable to make an impression on a guy he should have destroyed comprehensibly, caring or no.

Maybe it was the drink, but it seemed to me that williams was just a mess in there, there was not even a semblance of fluidity or ANYTHING suggesting that he could beat skelton.

we'll see I suppose.

No it wasnt the drink, Williams was awful. Much as he wasn't interested he couldn't even land anything significant on an overmatched opponent for 3 rounds. His shots were missing by a long chalk.

If he goes into the Skelton fight around 19 stone I think he's going to get his arse kicked.

Yeah we'll see mate. I reckon it's a bold statement to say a fighters whole career is finished off the back of one performance - where he wasn't even remotely tested. Plus Danny has looked listless PLENTY of times before when faced with such limited opposition.

And lets remember that Skelton has next to no speed or boxing skill. The way he pushes his punches makes you cringe at times, especially when you hear talk of world title challenges.
