Boxers who gained recognition in other sports ?

Post by LightCruiser »

I just read about an amateur boxer called Eddie Eagan who is the only person to win medals in summer and winter olympic games.
He won a boxing gold medal in summer 1920 and a bobsled gold medal in winter 1932.
It got me wondering if there were any other fighters who gained honours in sports other than boxing??? (Pro or Amateur).

Jack O'Halloran and Charlie Powell were pro football players before they turned pro boxers.

There was a guy at the 1908 Olympics named Reg 'Snowy' Baker that won the silver medal at middleweight (the opponent's father was the ref :o ) and I believe he later promoted a young 19 year old named Les Darcy. Journalist, author, actor the list goes on

Some of the sports that Baker represented Australia in, internationally - Boxing, Rugby Union, Diving, Swimming, Polo. This of course was before sporting specialisation became the norm

Anthony Mundine was a professional Rugby League player, and a very good one , although mabey not the best like he claimed imo, but he could have been argubally the best.. he has since won a paper version title :)
