Wally Swift

Post by palooka »

The name 'Wally Swift' keeps coming up in articles in Boxing News. I know he was pretty successful and I have read that he was described as a Midlands legend. I also know he had 2 sons who boxed professionally but not much else. Can anyone please let me know more about this man?

I assume you mean Snr? If so, don't know much about him.

Jnr was involved in one of those bouts that's talked about in hushed tones, the 2nd (?) Andy Till fight in '92 which won fight of the year I think. He also had another thriller with Tony Collins which lost out to the 3rd Andries/Harding battle as FOTY.

I should've been clearer; yes I mean Wally Swift Snr.

I can remember watching Swift Jnr v Tony Collins and was very impressed; an excellent bout.

I never saw Tony Swift box but apparently he was a class boxer as well.

You might have better luck if you post this on the British forum because someone like Scrap will probably remember his fighting days. All I know is that Swift was tough and canny. He was one of a large family from a rough area of Nottingham and they were all hard-bitten. Wally worked at the famous Raleigh factory in the city while he boxed, saved all his dosh and moved his wife and kids out to posh Solihull.

Thanks for that bennie; I'll try my luck on the British.
