Anyone else noticed: Amir Khan is now WBA SUPER-world champ?

Post by T.M.K »

Hi all,

sorry if this is old news, but just flicking around it seems Khan-McKloskey is now for the WBA Super-world title, and joy of joys: Marcos Maidana vs Erik Morales is now for the WBA world title.

The WBA are just ridiculous now, the super champ thing was brought in so unified champs weren't tied down by mandatories (which is ridiculous enough) but then to make people super champs when they only hold the WBA is beyond belief, they are a complete joke.

well looking at this as a glass half full man, it means it either paves the way for Bradley v Khan in the summer without any mandatory getting in the way or Khan v Maidaina the rematch

Well if the WBA made Haye 'super champ' then maybe he could fight Wladimir on 2nd July knowing he would have his belt intact which is basically his argument for 'having to fight before'.

If that were the case then even I would see that Haye had no excuse not to fight Wlad on 2nd July now.

Just when I think it can't get any worse something as utterly absurd as this happens.

I wonder why someone like Martinez doesn't take one of the alphabets to court ala Rochigianni - perhaps something like that would put an end to this nonsense

But the WBA call it Light-Welter, not Super-Lightweight (which is a WBC thing). However Felix Sturm is the WBA Super-world Super-Middleweight champion..... and I am NOT joking here.

That was different. Back in the 80's and 90's the WBA and WBO recognised anyone who made ten defences of their title as a Super-champion, but it was really only via giving them a commemorative belt. I remember chatting to Brian Mitchell once and he told me he was so proud of his 3 world title belts.... straight away, being an anorak I questioned the 3 and he told me the WBA gave him a special super-champions belt when he got to his 10th defence.

However, they were never billed as-such and they didn't have a regular champ beneath them or any of this stuff.

Glynner,

this was my pick a few weeks back on what would have happened. While I am glad it hasn't, the fact it is some of the reasoning which curtailed Wlad-Haye puts it into perspective.

Why all the negativity?

I am glad they have finally upgraded him, he deservers to be a super champion, he has made two defences now; I think it is scandalous that the WBA have failed to recognise him as a super champion before this.

Maidana or Morales will then become WBA regular champion!

Hopefully the WBA will then sort out the obvious gaping hole left by there being no interim champion in this weight division.

Then in time we could possibly get but probably not; some decent unification matches to decide who becomes undisputed WBA champion! But to avoid mandatory requirement issues for the winner, perhaps the WBA could create an undisputed belt too!

Then if Maidana collects the regular WBA, and makes a couple of defences he can also become a super champion and free up the regular belt. Then if Khan actually unifies with an alternate governing body why not make him the super duper WBA champion, as we need clear definitions between a unified and super champions! right?

It is confusing in some weight divisions the WBA have 3 champions, some 2, some only 1. Surely by creating an interim, regular, super, super duper and undisputed WBA champions standardised across all weight divisions it uniforms and simplifies the elite champion status.

Then once this is in place why not use the WBC idea to have Emeritus, Silver and Diamond belts to add some extra spice and silverware to boxing!

Hopefully the other sanctioning bodies are listening take note as there is a massive gap in the market being missed here!

Whilst on the subject, i read this little gem from the WBC earlier on (regarding Manny):
He is also the only fighter in the 49-year history of the WBC to ever win its absolute highest title - the Diamond Belt, which is only given to the greatest fighters of our time.
