Just as a minor matter of interest. I spoke to a promoter recently who was putting on a show without TV. Before he sold a ticket the promotion was costing him £12,000 all in .So he needed to sell 400 tickets just to clear his feet.
I wish all promoters all the best ,THEY are the people who are keeping the game alive . Brave men !!

I was speaking to a mate of mine the other day about the Latino shows that ESPN (used to?) put on. When I lived overseas I used to get them as part of my cable package. I didn't know the lads but over six rounds they went at it hammer and tongs. Some incredible action. Promoters over here simply don't want to risk getting their lads beat at all.

I wouldn't mind on an ordinary bill seeing one decent 'name' fight, a prospect and a couple of evenly matched six rounders. That's it. I'm not saying throw kids to the wolves but it's the other way at the moment and it's a load of wank half the time. Sky (ie their subscribers) are paying good money and they deserve some decent fare. Prospect v Pudding can f**k right off for me.

I know, but boxing fans need to shoulder some of the blame and stop calling kids exposed/useless after one loss, or focusing on it their whole career.

HHmmmmmm.......

Thats £30 per ticket then , are nobody getting a cut from those tickets ?, are there no more expensive tickets ? or are you thinking along the lines of £30 being the average received from each ticket .

Anyway if i was struggling to sell 400 tickets as a pro promotor i dont think id bother if it was regular occurance , understandable as a one off .

i sold 300 for the first white collar show i ever did , with no experience , the fighters all having their first bout and it took place in a village pretty much out the way of the main town , that incidently is the lowest number of tickets ever sold on one of my shows .

To be honest i dont think covering a total of 12k for a pro show is too big a deal , but to be honest on white collar shows theres things we can do that i suppose a pro show couldnt do to draw in punters , for example on my last show i had a glamour models bra and panties bout , whilst the boxing wasnt classic i get the feeling its not what the spectators were watching , if only things could be done by pros to bring in sales , gimmicky things may seem a bit cheesy to us real fans but they drag in extra casual fans , and lets be honest despite if we think its a bit cheesy are you going to refuse to attend a pro show if say Frank Maloney and co did something similar , I Wonder what the ref made of it

I think it's the other way round to be honest, Scott. The promoters/TV are so keen on protecting/building the '0' that younger fans think a defeat means disaster. Chicken and egg, I suppose.

If it was a more regular occurence to see prospect v prospect there wouldnt be that sort of "exposed" tag because nowadays if you are a top prospect and you get beaten in your first 10 fights you are getting exposed because the opponents they are being put in with are awful.

If we got to see more of Degale Groves Price Fury etc etc people would not be so quick to dish that tag out

Perhaps a bit of responsibility to both parties, the promoters start padding records to 20-0, fans respond by outrage at any loss and it's a self-defeating cycle. You have to think promoters respond to fan reaction to an extent though. Fans buy tickets to names, stacked cards or even high level competitive fights don't sell compared to a 'star' vs an overmatched opponent.

wrimc - Yep :TU: But I think a bit of both as I have elaborated on above.
