Worst Cosell fight ever?

Post by tagjohnson »

Okay, here's one. What is the worst job Howard Cosell ever did of calling a fight? I have two nominees. Chavez/Mayweather I where before and during the fight Cosell kept going on about Mayweather's "danergous" right hand and how Chavez better watch out for it right up until Chavez ok'd Mayweather in the second round with a right hand. Second, Quarry/Lyle during which Cosell repeatedly referred to Lyle (who's idea of counter punching consisted of hitting the other guy back after he hit him) as a "clever counter puncher" all the while Quarry was counter punching Lyle silly.

From my fairly limited exposure I would say Holmes - Cobb and Tillis -Shavers were examples of him disappearing into his own rectum.

Was he still calling fights by the time of Chavez - Mayweather? I thought Holmes-Cobb was his last hurrah.

Did Howard Cosell call either of these fights?

Cosell did leave boxing after Holmes-Cobb in November 1992. As far as I know he only called olympic boxing after that. The Chavez-Mayweather fight was telecast on CBS in the States and was called by Tim Ryan, Gil Clancey, and Sugar Ray Leonard.

Also, my copy of Quarry-Lyle, as well all I could find on YouTube, was called by Don Dunphy. Did Cosell also do a call for Wide World of Sports, perhaps?

Don't know about Quarry-Lyle, but it was a fairly common occurrence back in those days for Cosell to call the fight for a WWOS tape delay broadcast, while Dunphy called the fight for the live closed circuit viewing. For example, both men called the Frazier-Ellis unification bout in '70 and Frazier-Foreman in '73.

This is not a troll and I do not appreciate it being labeled as such. If you do not want to or cannot answer the question then please do not waste mine or anyone else's time. Holmes/Cobb was 1982 not 1992. And Cosell most certainly did call the Quarry/Lyle fight. I have it on DVD. If I made a mistake on the Chavez/Mayweather then I stand corrected and apologise. Not does anyone have an opinion on Cosell's worst job of calling a fight, which is the purpose of this post?

Quarry-Lyle was not shown on WWOS and Chavez-Mayweather happened years after Cosell had stopped calling boxing telecasts.

Re: Holmes-Cobb. Oops - My brain said "1982" while my fingers typed "1992".

....one of the worst of his many bad ones was ismael laguna against ken buchanan. i don't remember which of their two fights it was, but it was an excellent match between to very good boxers....a match up of skills...and silly-ass cosell said it ws a dull fight with not much happening....

Foreman vs. the 5 fighters in one day. Ali was with him and not only were the fights a joke, I though Cosell might try to make out with Ali. The man was in love.

According to Larry Holmes Autobiography, there were two instances when Cosell was drunk and started rubbing on Holmes leg under the table at a restaurant. :o

Without digging up the book I think Larry reacted with a "what the fornicate are you doing? Get off me!" Then he said Howard said something jokingly like "oh come on Larry you know you like it".

Cosell was clueless about boxing and it showed everytime. One thing he did was when left handed boxers fought, he called right jabs, "lead right hands." Cosell was terrible.
