Is this fight still on?

I would rather Mathews challenged Gethin for the English title than fight for these minor international belts.

In my mind the most commendable figure in current domestic boxing is not John Simpson or Matthew Hatton or Anthony Crolla or Steve Foster or Ashley Theophane or Danny McIntosh or Jamie McDonnell or Ricky Burns, or all those other superb overachievers, but a man who rose from the dead - not after four days like Lazarus - but after four heavy stoppage defeats in that of Liverpool's remarkable Derry Matthews.
I say remarkable because Matthews built up a record of 20-0 in his early pro years, including thrilling decisions over Simpson and Foster, to earn himself a 'live' Saturday night fight on ITV1 and a tag of 'Golden Boy' but then it all started to crumble as firstly he busted up badly in fights, then went over from head and body shots, particularly body shots, and after Stoke's light-hitting Scott Lawton doubled him up and stopped him in six rounds in 2009, Matthews announced his inevitable retirement.
Perhaps just as inevitably, he was back a few months later, citing weight problems for his earlier frailties. He was just too big to boil down to his old featherweight without weakening himself he said. Yeah, right! Now a rangy lightweight, Matthews has netted five wins out of six on his comeback, avenging the Lawton loss and one to the much-feared Choi Tseveenpurev of Mongolia in the process. My God, he was right! The lone defeat came to hot Welshman Gary Buckland, who had just flattened reigning British super-featherweight champion Gary Sykes in 45 seconds of a non-title affair, so you can hardly bunch it up with the other setbacks.
No, the 27-year-old Matthews is back, and back in style, and while he will never have the durability of "Sailor" Tom Sharkey, his long, raking shots to head and body from a much tighter guard than before make him a big favourite to keep his form going against Chester's once-beaten Chris Goodwin in Chester in April because Goodwin, who lost his debut in 2006 but has gone unbeaten ever since, cannot whack at 12-1-1 (0), although he certainly moves and switch-hits well.
On home ground, Goodwin will also be 'up' for it but to win this he really needs to raise his game and that lack of power and experience (he's never done more than six rounds) will surely cost him as the 'new' Matthews boxes sharply, intelligently and tellingly on the way to a late stoppage win.

DERRY MATHEWS’ world title shot has been rejected by British boxing chiefs.

The 27-year-old had lined up a tilt at the vacant World Boxing Federation Intercontinental lightweight title against Chester’s Chris Goodwin in April.

However the British Boxing Board of Control do not recognise the governing body’s fights and so have pulled the plug on Mathews’ plans.

The BBBofC have also voiced concerns over the suitability of 14-fight Goodwin as an opponent with the 12-1-1 man having never gone beyond six rounds ahead of this proposed championship bout over 12 three-minute sessions.

Furthermore, Mathews has been left with the possibility of having his International Boxing Organisation International lightweight strap – won in January with a thrilling victory over Scott Lawton – taken off him.

Mathews is now number 62 in the IBO world rankings and though their belt was not going to be on the line against Goodwin, pitting the Liverpool man against an opponent deemed not good enough could have prompted them to strip ‘Dirty’ of his recently acquired belt.

The IBO however would be ready to sanction a contest between Mathews and a calibre of opponent such as their Intercontinental lightweight champion Azad Azizov.

Mathews’ team have already been offered the chance to fight the Azerbaijan man in Germany with Azizov having a May 7 defence of his title pencilled in.

Promoter Stephen Vaughan is keen to keep Mathews’ fight date of April 2 however and given Goodwin now appears to be out of the equation, the venue will change from the Northgate Arena in Chester to, most likely, The Olympia in Liverpool.

The undercard is still to feature such local talent as Rocky Fielding, Nick MacDonald and Graham Delehedy.

All hope is not lost on the WBF front however, with the governing body having fights sanctioned in southern Ireland, an avenue which may yet to explored by Mathews’ team.

Vaughan is known to be in close contact with WBF president Howard Goldberg on the matter.

Mathews started a two week training camp with WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns on Sunday.
