RIA RAMNARINE returned to the ring with a slender points victory over Colombian Olga Julio on Sunday night at the Jean Pierre Complex, Port of Spain.
The fight was a difficult one to score, with the judges awarding 33-year-old Ramnarine a split decision points victory.
Guyanese judges Andrew Thorne (98-92) and Eion Jardine (98-94) felt Ramnarine's aggression won her the fight, while Bajan H Downer (95-99) saw the more technical boxer Julio as the victor.
With the win, Ramnarine's professional record moved to 14 wins, five defeats, and a draw. She also added the vacant WIBF and GBU mini-flyweight (105 lbs) and the WIBA light-flyweight (108 lbs) world titles to her collection. Julio's record fell to nine wins and ten defeats.
Ramnarine's purse was US$10,000, while Julio earned US$3,000.
Staged in the midst of the Carnival season, the fight was not well attended.
Also on the night, middleweight Lorissa Rivas (3-1), an American fighter of T&T parentage, scored an unanimous points decision over Guyanese Sharon Ann Antigua.
Bajan cruiserweight Shawn "The Sniper" Cox made light work of Jamaican Carlton Bailey, knocking his opponent down twice in the opening round and prompting the referee to stop the contest.
And the 12- round CABOFE super-welterweight title fight between locally-based Guyanese super-welterweight Iwan Azore and another Guyanese, Winston Pompey, was declared a technical draw.
After a clash of heads two minutes and two seconds into the third round, the fight was stopped on the advice of the ring doctor as Pompey suffered a cut over the eye. Azore was a late replacement for injured Kevin Placide.
There was bad blood in the opening fight between Leeann Boodram (2-2) and Tiana Sosa Saney (3-0).
Rivals from their amateur days, the fight turned into a wrestling match at times, the women falling to the ground and wailing at each other like street fighters rather than boxers.
Boodram began aggressively, landing hard punches to Saney's head, and seemed to have edged the opening two rounds. However, she was a spent force afterwards and Saney rallied to win a majority points decision.
The main fight between Ramnarine and Julio failed to live up to its billing and was a bit of an anti-climax. It was also difficult to score as there were few punches which landed cleanly. And having looked an improved fighter when she took on Japanese Etsuko Tada last April, Ramnarine seem to regress badly against Julio.
The Colombian looked the far more clever fighter and did her best work during the first half of the fight, when easily side-stepping Ramnarine and landing the odd punch to the head as well.
Ramnarine appeared to struggle with the angles which Julio presented to her. But the local fighter was the aggressor in the later rounds. Although she charged forward and put pressure on her opponent, Ramnarine still missed more punches than she landed.
The scores suggest that the judges all saw the fight differently.
