York Hall virgin

about to pop his cherry this evening.

Used to live in London when I was a teen and went over to just see it but never went to a fight there. What should I expect and what is your fondest memory of the venue?

Alyhough I've been going to York Hall for over 40 years, my fondest memory Is probably the atmosphere created by the rival fans of Lenny Daws and Nigel Wright when they fought for the vacant British title in 2006. I wasn't expecting much but it turned into a great night. My advice would be to aim for a seat in the balcony directly over the ring.

I'd have to massively disagree on that one!

For me you cannot beat the atmosphere, smell or feel of being at a massive sporting event.

Boxing wise the only real big fight i've attended was Hatton Tsyzu and the atmosphere and drama that night in the MEN could not be replicated watching it in front of the telly.

this is a bold statement, but with the right fight and right sets of fans, i would go as far as saying its the best boxing venue in the world, and just remember you probably wont get that near to watching frankie gavin ever again for £40 !
balcony seats the best. i find the bar ok to be honest, never seen trouble in there.

i had a good seat for the first prizefighter (rogan), ground floor just as you come in.
second time Cruiserweight prizefigher (lewis-dickinson) i was directly above by the top door...crap view..everyone standing in the isle ..security dont move them...and some idiot Corbett fans kept jumping about with a huge flag in front of us...then tried to fight.
third time i was at the last Sprotty prizefighter.... i was to the side on the ground floor ..worst view of all..people constantly stepping on ur toes.

ive noticed that the 'ringside' seats have been extended for those rich tits and freeloaders....(im fed up seeing Buncey desperately looking around for someone to recognise him)

all and all York Hall Prizefighters started off good and have got worse due to over doing it...reducing the quality...charging more...and disenfranchising the poorer fans.


i would add that i dont go to 'regular' shows because the bill's are such poor quality.

Is it purely from a purist point of view in terms of being able to watch all the fighting close up, replays etc. and does an atmosphere not play any part in the experience for you?

The main reason for me watching a fight is to actually see it, and yes, I want to be close to the action. I'm not fussed about the atmosphere. I get excited about a fight just as much from home. The boxing crowds will always consist of a few undesirables who are likely to spoil it for many. At least in my experience. I just can't be bothered with putting up with it, and being out of pocket for doing so.

Balcony seats (get there early, que on the middle steps) are absolutely fantastic, proper way to watch boxing.

York Hall is our home of boxing

We ahve had some great nights in there, had some bad ones too I love the place, it is small enough to get a great view and big enough to carry a huge atmosphere, parking can be a nightmare and the dressing rooms are a bit tiny but you cant beat the ghosts of boxing past and I feel that everytime I walk in the place.

Hubbie loves it there too but these days prefers to sit at home and watch on tv while keeping an eye on what you lot are saying, makes me laff when he is realllllllly into a fight and starts leaning to one side, almost throwing shots for them, he nearly fell off the chair once haha bless.

I love the York Hall, historic, intimate venue and the balcony hangs over the ring. Class. On the subject of great boxing venues, the one regret I have is that I never got to see a fight in the Albert Hall - everyone raves about it.
