Memorable for: Many, many upsets. Unpredictability. The perennial chance of a knockout win. A journeyman who grafted his way to two world title shots. Possibly the last British boxer to engage in a five-fight rivalry (could be wrong but nothing else springs to mind). And a piece of negative legacy - was involved in the first WBF (in fact, first non-big 4) title fight in Britain, which opened the floodgates...

His fight with John Moody in 1987 is, in my opinion, one of the greatest domestic fights ever.

I’m not one to go for the obvious but I’ll make an exception for this thread.

Richard ‘The Secret’ Williams. Former two-time Commonwealth, IBO and WBF boss. Dropped a points decision early in his career but regrouped. Shot to prominence when he battered Shannan Taylor. There were rumours that Williams would get the nod to fight ODH as Oscar was dabbling with the idea of fighting in the UK (or at least said he was) but the ‘Golden Boy’ wanted Williams to boil down to featherweight, sign a three rematch clause and devote the rest of his life to the ‘Golden One’.

Williams dabbled in a ‘help the aged’ style food delivery job. Enjoyed playing his Playstation and was on his way to big things when Paul Samuels roused himself from his dogmatic slumbers and opened up a huge cut in their first meeting. Boxrec was so moved by his fight that they’ve added a note to the technical draw result, ‘Samuels was in the ascendancy at the time of the stoppage’ – strange given that they’re just supposed to give the bare result on the record pages and offer the option of clicking a link if we want opinion on the fight itself.

However, I digress. Williams won the rematch and was on his way to big things. Step in Sergio Martinez, we didn’t know him then, we don’t really know him now but, blimey, he weren’t half hot, mum.

Williams came in 2006. His work during this period reminded me of Vernon Forrest’s work after he came back. Some nice boxing and the odd quality finishing blow. Richard had a London derby against Howard Eastman for the British title. DG and I argued over this one, a lot, but it turned us into friends for life as we both liked/loved both fighters. We PM’d one another to confirm this, but I did want Williams to win.

It was a quality little fight, Richard was too small and Howard closed the show. Williams has been MIA ever since.

He finished with a 21-4-1 (17) record, he was, probably still is, 5’ 9’’ and he was an exceptionally decent boxer.

He was stopped by Mick Alexander in 5 rounds early in his career. Mick is a referee nowadays.

First live bill I went to Tom the bomb at Leeds town hall. He was prone to being a bit lazy but if the right hook connected it was game over!

Weaknesses: Prone to cuts,questionable defence, needed a better manager (matched very tough from day one).

Notes: A guy who was "much better than his record" got some great wins like Lueshing and former european champ Varela which showed his ability. Ven at the end of his career managed to floor the very decent Michael Jennings before being stopped on cuts.
