Billy Webster RIP

Billy Webster the Fitzroy Lodge Legend has passed away and I would like to voice my love for a giant of the ring. Legend is a much overused word in boxing but it is not misplaced with Billy Webster.

Rest in peace Billy

Goodbye Billy. I'm lucky enough to have seen a great many famous professional trainers in action - in Britain and overseas. I'd rate Billy as highly as any of them. He helped to shape a young David Haye and thousands of others. He was a tremendous character - genuinely tough but such a warm and friendly soul. I can't imagine how many young kids he influenced for the better in South London over his four decades at the Lodge. The Fitzroy Lodge is the most incredible amateur club - you really can feel the history when you step into that railway arch. Billy and Mick Carney - they are both giants of the unpaid code. R.I.P. Just seen this news on Twitter as I'm guzzling my fat face in a pub in Oval. RIP Billy Webster... Told me many tales, most of them twice over, but my word, have I ever had as ruthlessness on the pads as when he would take me, "how hard do you wanna go?" Me; "very hard" (I had a contest. Unsung Hero, not in my House He wasnt. Was the Biggest influance in my Life was Billy, like a Father to me, and Hundreds like me. He was the biggest reason I became a coach, wonderfull Man. condolences to His Family, He will be missed but never forgotten.

He was a genius in the gym. A fantastic man.
I went to see him with Lodge old boys Ron Boddy and Wally Anglis a few weeks ago. As we were leaving Gary and Jimmy Cable were going in. The nurse told us that 'tough looking men' had been coming in and out for days to see William Webster. She was stunned that the gentle old man knew so many tough looking people. He knew them, he made them.

He said it to all the lads individually to make them feel special and, of course, without Billy (and Mick Carney) there would be no Boza, no David Haye, no Larry O'Connell, no Tony Burns, no Vic Andreeti, no Dave Charnley, no Freddie Hill...

Billy Webster was not only one of the finest coaches, he was one of lifes finest gentleman ! He gave me a lot of good & constructive advice in my early days & over the years whenever i called into the Fitzroy Lodge, he would always have a warm smile & always say how pleased that i was doing well.
Along with Mick Carney, Billy help lay the foundations & build one of the finest boxing clubs in the world !

Popped in to see Billy every other day in hospital during this last month...most days with other ex-Lodge boys.
I gave him my old Lodge vest because if anything it belonged to him,the nurses said he wouldn't take it off!
Yep as Buncey said all the nurses were baffled as to why all these polite,fit,tough looking looking men of different races and religion kept coming in to visit this gentle old man!
They all found out in the end and i'm glad to say he got a bit of special treatment.
Whenever i was there all the other visitors in the ward always came up and wanted to talk to me and Billy about Boxing!
The best bit was when i helped lift him up onto his bed,i had my arms under his(worse thing i could have done) he looked me in the eye then gave me that smile of his and then dug two well placed hooks into my ribs!
He taught me(along with Mick) how to conduct myself in this world.... as well as box!
Maybe they never made me a world champion.....but more importantly...they made me the person i am today!
If i'm ever half as good as him as a trainer i'll be very content man!

My old man boxed amateur at fitzroy lodge for a few years, and says Billy Webster was the best pads man he has ever moved round with, there was no one who come close to him. Rip billy, god bless x

An amazing turn out today - credit to David Haye and his parents for coming down. Marcus McCrae, Justin Hudson, Ted Bami, Nigel Travis, Lewis Reynolds and Craig Stanley were also former Lodge pro's present, plus undefeated prospect Martin Welsh. Tony Burns from the Repton was there and fellow Lodge old boy Howard Rainey. Eddie Lam, now a pro trainer working with Al Smith. Dean Powell, Billy Aird, Mick Carney, ABA spokesman Ron Boddy, former Commonwealth champion Chris Okoh, Keith Walters, former amateurs Damaen Gregory, Sean Tobin, Pete Scottow, Tom Crowe, Kevin Gaywood, Darren and Wesley Morgan, Oli Edis, Nick Bond (also from Boxing News), amateur centurion Mark Reigate and Adam Martin... too many to mention, lots of flat noses. Billy Webster represented everything that makes boxing a great sport. R.I.P.

"Lots of flat noses". Superb, Ed, and thanks for the 'feel' of a poignant day. Nobody will ever replace Billy Webster, nobody can ever replace Billy Webster.
