Kevin mitchell to retire?

Post by lefty »

Over on BS its saying that a source very close to mitchells has said he may retire due to the murray fight falling through over money,it says he's on a 5 fight deal with warren and thus wouldnt be able to fight somewhere else.Seems abit silly to me!

It's inevitable that he'd be getting a lot less than he got for Katsidis. If he wins this fight the better pay days are out there.

I don't see how Warren is at fault here at all. Mitchell's the one who prepared like a jackass for the biggest opportunity of his career.

If Kevin had been to the specialist a year ago, that was before the Katsidis bout. Doesn't that raise the possibility that he went in with eye problems? He obviously had concerns to seek specialist advice. Wouldn't there have been a written report of the specialists' findings?

Not sure about 'tosser', he's not a young man now and boxing is a fit, healthy young mans game. If he feels he's been thrown to the lions etc he's going to throw his toys out of the pram. At the same time that F W has put food on Kevins table, Mitchell has reciprocated, he has had a good fan base and been a ticket seller from day one, at 18.

It is obvious that a European Title challenge on the undercard of a World Title challenge will be for short money compared to a World Title challenge at home in front of home fans.

There must be more too it; Mitchell has been in the game a long time and knows how it works.

I bet he feels about 40! He has been boxing at high level; national champion for his age group since 13/14 years old every year till ABA champion at 18 (there are some excellent boxers in the ABAs), then a full time pro. I bet his body is playing up; there's some wear and tear, bound to be.

he's had a year out near enough hasnt he? no tune-ups for whatever reason, either take even shorter money against a no-mark or pensioner and then wait for another big chance to come along, or take an unexpected Euro title shot, which if you believe you can win, is a shortcut to the big money. Theres a clue there IMO.

Just sounds like he is trying to call allegedlys bluff. It is sort of contradictory in some respects.
Plus if he does take the fight it isnt a guaranteed win.

What sums are on offer ?

Must be really paltry, but then again he blew his big night and Warren was probably rightfully p****** off with that.

From a selfish point of view, I just wanna see the fight !

Well they reckon he got 60k for the katsidis fight and that reckon fw is offering about half of that for this fight

So £30,000; after management, trainers, camp fees, taxes he'd walk off with maybe £17,000. I always imagined that high level boxing was better paid.

think he would of gotten more than that but wouldnt surprise me if he has been offered 20 g for the murray fight he the challenger and plenty of people would fight him for that high profile fight but more or less he has been use to good money now its peanuts in his eye i say murray stops him :box:

Let's not forget the guy is only trying to earn a living. I can't understand why Frank didn't put him on Saturdays york hall bill for a tune up. Earn a bit of cash in the process, improve the bill and get him ready for a crack at Murray..... Then again does Boxing ever make sense?

We dont know the 'ins' and 'outs', however if it's really a purse issue, then it's pretty poor.

A fight, a decent purse and a shot at the Euro Belt. The opponent is a toughie, but then, what do you expect?

Mitchell should buck up his ideas.

Weird situation: FW clearly seems pissed at Mitchell over being ( as he sees it ) dicked around. But no way will Mitchell retire, what else is he gonna do that pays that well ? Zip.

But it's a severe ask for Frank to ask him back, after a devastating loss & year out, and sling him in cold with a fearsome undefeated fighter like Murray.

The way out has to be for Mitchell to at least get a warm up, then accept the offer and take on Murray in a make or break, sell out fight in the summer.

Kevins an exciting fighter and it would be a loss for him to bow out at 26. When he turned pro I remember Frank w calling him boxing's Wayne Rooney! He did build up an impressive record after seven years and 30 odd fights, but on the biggest night he couldn't do it. He should take the Murray fight, I think he could have a chance.

His record, for the most part (bar Johanson, Prescott and Katisdes) was padded with the usual suspects:

- South Amrican or Eastern European
- Fighting above natural weight
- Couldn't punch.

Not really ever was impressed by him, some good matchmaking for sure. A little overrated imo.

if the above figures are true, the fact he only got £60k to top the bill at Upton Park is much more shocking than getting £30k to fight on the undercard of someone elses World Title fight and have a European Title Shot.

DeGale probably got paid more for the fight at West Ham.... mad.
