WBC orders immediate rematch
between Corrales and Castillo!

Friday, June 10 2005

Corrales camp appeals WBC ruling

The WBC has ordered an immediate rematch between lightweight champion Diego Corrales and former champ Jose Luis Castillo. Castillo protested Corrales' tenth round TKO win to the Mexico City-based sanctioning body, arguing that Corrales was given extra time to recover after being knocked down twice earlier in round ten of their classic confrontation on May 7. The Corrales camp has appealed the WBC's direct rematch order and the matter will now go to the WBC appeals committee. Corrales holds both the WBC and WBO lightweight crowns.

I don't think that this fight should be happening again, the first encounter was so brutal and absorbing i don't agree with the immediate rematch...if anything they should have each gone there seperate ways before thinking about fighting again. The WBC are of course only interested in the money spinning aspect of the rematch and are promoting it under the guise of fairness...there was nothing wrong with the performance or decisions of referee Tony Weeks and i think he has been unfairly treated.

Totally agree! The WBC appear to be completely in the pocket of the Mexican boxing establishment. No way would they react like this if the roles were vice versa in round 10 of that fight. Appropriate their belt's coloured green, the colour of slime. Suliman even looks like a slug... but that's for another thread.

They are only doing this because they know that NEITHER guy wants to face off against one another immediately, so they can basically award the belt back to Castillo or at the least strip Corralles and have a box off for it.

The WBC are an absolute mockery, Sulaiman just does whatever he sees fit to protect the fighters he likes, usually mexicans.

The stoppage was fair, Castillo was totally helpless and in against an absolutely murderous puncher, another few seconds and he could have been hospitalised. Whislt I felt sorry for Castillo, that's the way it goes sometimes, you drop an opponent, and end up getting stopped yourself.

Those two guys shouldn't face eachother for a good while, that fight was truly brutal, they should each have a contest first.

Financially it makes sense if they meet against champs, but the manipulation sucks.

Didn't Coralles say he'd take a Castillo rematch over a fight with Hatton or anyone else anyway?

A rematch would be an anti-climax.

I think both were winners really first time around, as cliched as that sounds. I also think Corrales will have lost more in the bigger picture than the slightly less battered Castillo but hey, I suppose you can never write off Chico...
