Nigel Benn vs Michael Watson (rematch 1990)

Post by Mimmy »

Ok after the great match up in 1989, in the tent in Finsbury park, Still love to watch that fight.

Benn went off to the States for a fight with Jorge Amparo and won a decision and Watson had nearly a year to wait until the fight with McCallum. Lets say though Benn went off to the Sates for his comback fight and Watson gave him a rematch rather than the fight with McCallum.

Who would win, and do you think it would match the first fight?

I'd favour Benn to take the return via UD.

Can't see him falling for Watsons tactics a second time and would be more cautious when letting the bombs go, but still enough to outwork Watson, who would no doubt try similar tactics as he did fear Benns power.

Did you see Ringside the other week? Watson claimed Benn was his hardest opponent.

Benn's power could/would keep boxers from being too agressive. he could pile up a points lead but as Galvano (was it Galvano?) showed Nigel could be undone by a clever counter.

The rematch would have been even better than the first fight.

I seem to recall Galvano caught Benn in the closing stages and wobbled him badly after doing virtually nothing for the entire bout

Yes, Benn lost concentration for just a second.
