Who is this, then STATING such FACTS; Kevin this should particularily interest you!!!
Top promoter Harry Levene wanted NO PART of Bert Gilroy and Levene was Jack Solomons mentor before Solomons soon became England's greatest ever promoter. For a while it was Levene and Solomons' promotions. Jack Solomons handled Freddie Mills and many others. He promoted EVERY big International show in Britain right up to the 1970s I believe.
Back to the LETTER, Mr. so & so ??? "dug-up" an old letter/article from ??? written to Henry Rose of a leading Manchester Newspaper, Mr. Rose a famous reporter was killed in a fatal plane crash with a whole soccer team in the 50s!
Anyhow the letter from??? (1942) intimates ??? decision to retire stating that "they will not allow the middleweight contenders to fight me
and the bigger men want no part of me.
He goes on to say that he is going to venture into business outside of boxing and at least the contenders should get a chance at his titles!
HE adds "I've been following the progress of challengers and
"I" rate the Scottish boxer from Coatbridge Bert Gilroy the 'likely' client for TOP HONOURS, Gilroy is the one I feel could become Champion, given the RIGHT chance!
Who's speaking and where does that place Gilroy then, considering WHO this man is?
Boy's if I told you what I recieved would you EXCEPT it!
41 fights without defeat mid 1937- 43...
38 wins (23 KO's), 3 draws (2 ?'d)
a further 44 fights from early 1943-50
30 wins (13 KO's), 13 losses (7 ?'d), 1 draw (?'d)
making it 68 wins (36 KO's), 13 losses (7 ?'d), 4 draws (3 ?'d),
that's only 13 losses of 85 contests!
All of these men were Champions, Top Contenders and performers... most notable (Internationally) Ginger Sadd, Jack Hyams, Jock McAvoy, Freddie Mills, Bruce Woodcock, Pat O'Connor, Jim Berry, Dave McCleave, Ben Valentine, Vince Hawkins, Ken Shaw, Marcel Cerdan, Johnny DeVilliers, Stephen Olek, Don Cockell, and several more.
ALL of Gilroy's ?'d losses & draws are WELL DOCUMENTED, by the greatest boxing writers and sport writers of the day... they DID NOT WANT BERT GILROY 'THROUGH'... FACT!!!
Bert Gilroy's story is the greatest 'injustice' in British Sport never mind Boxing!!!

Yes must have been McAvoy who didn't box after the Freddie Mills fight, until coming back for three fights in 1945.jimglen wrote:Who is this, then STATING such FACTS; Kevin this should particularily interest you!!!

McAvoy was a great boxer but also past his best in the 40's.
Jim Ive purchased and read the book and can reccomend it on several levels.
Firstly the story of Bert himself and his family is both moving and interesting.
Secondly it gives a fascinating insight into the boxing climate of the era and the booths.
its well written and reseached and a must of you have any interest in british boxing of that era.
However with all due respect to call it britain biggest sporting injustice is on a par with another post of yours "Henry cooper would have beaten lennox lewis".
Both arent true. Move out of the black and white era mate, we have had colour a long time now.
I appreciate your tenacity in getitng your grandfather recognised and through the book you have certainly to this boxing fan, however I do feel that you push the point at every given opportuniity. It happened no one can change what did go on mate, and i have sympathy for you but its getting a bit wearing.....
This can have the opposite effect to what you are trying to attain.
Just a friendly word of advice. take it or leave it.

Thanks, J and Hi Kev!
Yes 'J' your right, and I am well aware of this fact!
But what some people don't realize is, as a writer with a fantastic story and ALL the documentation to go with it on hand... that is still not enough to break the "inner circle".
Gilroy is one of those greats who has fallen into the pages of forgotten fighters, so in order to reach the Top, his story has to be "revived" with and through 'normal' punters like you and I 'J'.
And then and only then with Bert's name circulating through the minds and hearts of a good number of Serious boxing fans and supporters.
We begin to move up through the ranks, so to speak, in order to reach the people who can make a difference in Bert's story and case... keeping in mind I myself have a timeline.
Bert's story is only now reaching new levels of contacts and by the "grace of God this great warrior will receive his "Just Reward"... and thats what I did this for, TO GIVE BERT BACK WHAT WAS TAKEN FROM HIM..!
A more Honorable pursuit than monetary returns or self seeking praise... I'm glad you enjoyed the book and Bert's story, in this particular thread however I'm just trying to answer Klomptons questions... "even with facts he's a hardman to reason!"
God Bless you all and Thanks again, Jim.
P.S. you must admit receiving a letter like I did last week is something to get excited about!
