Had to laugh today RE Burns and the Sky team

Post by Dioufy »

I'm not knocking Burns here, but the Sky team. The lad was doing an open session today in Scotland and the broadcast lasted about 5 minutes. In that time the Sky preceded to call Burns the super middleweight champ, then a few minutes later the super lightweight champ, then when they showed him sparring our own Derry, the called him a former world champ.

Ed, if you reading, have a word, matey.

Nice, "Light...Super Middleweight...Super Lightweight, Jim", eventually nails it as the Super Featherweight title. Wonder if someone was gesturing in the background, pointing down when he went too high. 'Warmer, Warmer, :TU:' Although good to see Burns on SSN anyway!

Yet more evidence that Sky Sports News is totally lost when talking about anything other than football.

You're already in enough trouble about the washing up, without making enemies at Sky

I'll tell you what pissed me off; when they called Mathews a former world champ I sneered and called the TV a cock-sucker. My misses then asked what was the matter, so I told her that Mathews wasn't ever a world champ, and she said, and I quote, "why would they lie?". Proof on how their MO work regarding boxing/casual fans.

They know what they're doing regarding the truth, and it doesn't sit right with me.

He didn't call Matthews a former world champ did he? He won the English title, so is a former champ. Not that that's probably the distinction they were making.

I'm sure they said world champ, but I can't access that video cos I'm working. But I suppose I could be wrong.

I know he wasn't a recognised world champ, but I saw your comment about Derry before I watched the video and seem to remember him only saying champ. Just a technicality though as he surely meant world.

In a way boxing brings it on itself.

All the weights, all the belts, who can keep up.

Don't confuse the reporter or the punter, just say "boxer, Ricky Burns..." !

That's hilarious. It's just the way he says it, really fast, cos he obviously hasn't a clue. "WB...Light-Super-middleweight/Super-lightweight - Jim..."

I've had the same arguement over and over again about belts and titles but derry was WBU champ and beat a good Ste Foster during his WBU days, you tell micky ward he wasn't a world champ when he won his WORLD title from Shea Neary. So Derry was a world champ in tha majority of peoples eyes.If not yours diofy

I didn't say Ward was a world champion because he beat Neary. I don't rank the WBU anyhow, otherwise I might as well rank shit like the IBA, IBC. If they can call Mathews a world chmpion, or at least insinuate it, then no wonder boxing is such a minority sport.

Derry, mate. You have the wrong end of the stick, and a problem in making funny jokes. I said it was wrong to call you a world champion - winning the WBU belt is an achievement, but answer this, do you call yourself a former world champion? Because I don't, and I'd guess more that 99% of this forum concur.

Jeez.

I agree, the wbu title whilst still an accomplisment is not a legit world title because if it was going to be treated that way then you might aswell just create another batch of these titles and fighter in the division can be a world champion! :witzend:
