And he really has a sh!t voice for commentating. To think, someone actually told him he had a good voice :o

He just growls, or tries to growl in a slow, deep way and it sounds crap, always has.

I was the one who went to uni with him and it's fair to say the group he was a part of weren't a pleasant bunch collectively, but as I've said elsewhere, that was nearly 20 years ago and everyone changes over time - I know there are things I did at a similar age that make me absolutely cringe now, for example.
In this case, there are people on the board that clearly know him far better than I did and have far more recent experience of dealing with him so I'm more than happy to accept that the common consensus that he's a decent guy is an accurate one :TU:

My problem with Smith is that he is not a boxing man. Simple as that, another public schoolboy on the make. For him being a nice guy or not - Gary Newbon was not a nice guy but he was a boxing man through and through and in hindsight did a lot for the sport, as soon as Newbon left his post as head of sport at ITV so did boxing.

Ed Robinson is a boxing nut and loves the sport, but would he be where he is if it wasn't for his background and education?

If someone gave Adam Smith some rugby union commentators job - he would be out of the boxing like a flash! :TU:

Carlos, that's what I used to be convinced of, but simply put I think he's been in boxing for too long for it just to be a cynical career move. There are also a lot of people in the industry who've come on here to say the guy is genuinely passionate about the sport for it not to be true.
There's no doubt he got the initial break despite lacking credentials, but if he's grown to love the game in the same way the rest of us have then it's hard to begrudge him his success.

He's obviously business minded, passionate about boxing and I'm sure he wants sky to get better so don't see why people would have a problem with him.

Just because he's never laced a pair of gloves up dosent mean he carnt work in boxing

He is much better in the studio than as a commentator where he is consistantly poor.
His supporters always point to the fact that he loves boxing and is a nice guy but then many on the forum fall into that bracket, just without influential fathers!
He is rarely accused of being good at his job!

Adam Smith makes a change from all the stupid, thick uneducated bastards that litter our sport as it is.

He and the rest of his staff conduct themselves in the proper Great British manner.

Everyone who I know that watches boxing thinks the same as you Hagler, including me.

Did anyone else notice how he was with Foster snr at the end of the latest Ringside?? He is a smug little.....

He should be behind the scenes not popping up everywhere. I also think he knows f all about boxing, he is usually Reading from a script/autoQ.

Ed Robinson has really grown on me recently and I think he is a real boxing man who can relate to the fighters. I think Ringside would be much better without Adams insensitive comments and poor insights.

He seems like an alright guy to me overrall. He may well of been a twat at uni but he's most likely grown up alot since those days.I admit he's a poor commentator, however he's a very good presenter in my eyes and makes it look easy when its actually not for people in the know. You only have to see Johnny 'wood' nelson trying to read off the autocue to see that!

Who cares where Adam Smith and Ed Robinson comes from or what they were like as youths? Ringside is a brilliant programme, they are both in touch with what the fans want to see and know, this is evident in the questions being asked of people in boxing (Smith didn't shy away from difficult questions to David Haye for one) and as a boxing fan that is all I care about.

I agree mate, you should be judged on your performance and smith is a presenter mainly on ringside and a good one in my opinion.

I've to disagree,

Everyone has been a dick at some time in their lives. Smith has had an enviable background and they do have an easier time getting into great jobs. So what? You may as well start a thread moaning that the grass is green.

He is changing things for the better: Rome wasn't built in a day. He has put the hours in and seems to be a boxing fan.

Johnny Nelson is a bloody good commentator; he has insight, knowledge and charisma. He may not be so brilliant on an autocue but that's because he spent his formative years training and boxing and not at RADA.

I like Smith and believe his passion for the sport is genuine. Admittedly he is not a top class commentator, but then again we don`t have many in Britain that are. So what if he comes from a middle class background, it certainly does not make him any less of a boxing fan for that reason.
