He seems like an alright guy to me overrall.He may well of been a twat at uni but he's most likely grown up alot since those days.I admit he's a poor commentator,however he's a very good presenter in my eyes and makes it look easy when its actually not for people in the know.You only have to see Johnny 'wood' nelson trying to read off the autocue to see that!

I've to disagree,

Everyone has been a dick at some time in their lives. Smith has had an enviable background and they do have an easier time getting into great jobs. So what? You may as well start a thread moaning that the grass is green.

He is changing things for the better: Rome wasn't built in a day. He has put the hours in and seems to be a boxing fan.

Johnny Nelson is a bloody good commentator; he has insight, knowledge and charisma. He may not be so brilliant on an autocue but that's because he spent his formative years training and boxing and not at RADA.

He's pretty awful in front of the autocue though to be fair!Ha

Johnny is on there for his knowledge, personality and appearance; he is a very good spokesman for the sport and he is articulate without trying to appear what he is not. Autocue will add to some commentators competence and detract from others. Give Johnny another year or 2 to develop and he'll be the business; he is a consummate professional whatever he does.

We'll have to agree to disagee on this one,ive always found him abit boring to be honest and some of the questions he asks of guests on ringside seem abit ridiculous at times although i couldnt give you an example at the minute off the top of my head.Ive always preferred the likes of mcguigan myself.

He'd choose a really archaic or overblown word or phrase; it seemed in an attempt to demonstrate his intelligence. It weren't necessary and for me it were a bit silly. Barry is a bone fide expert in any case. (A friends' son is being trained by Barrys' son Shane and apparently Shane has a real talent for it).

Having Bob Mee on the commentary team is a big plus, here is an example of a middle class bloke who has never boxed but is someone I consider a true boxing man with vast knowledge. His experience has been as a journalist but especially with a bit more experience, he will be absolute quality.
In fairness to Smith he is doing a decent job in the studio and that is where he should stay.

I was pulled up on my pronunciation (+ I am a Yorkshireman); I felt small, unintelligent and uncultured; the experience scarred me emotionally. There's a lot more history to it than that mate, without wishing to drag up old stories. I don't know Ed personally, but my friend was at the same school as him and based on his anecdotal evidence he's always been a boxing man. With Adam Smith, to the best of my knowledge that simply wasn't the case.
However, I agree with others in terms of the past being the past. I haven't had the chance to see the new-look Ringside etc, but it sounds like things are changing for the better at Sky and that can only be applauded.

My problem with Smith is that he is not a boxing man. Simple as that, another public schoolboy on the make. For him being a nice guy or not - Gary Newbon was not a nice guy but he was a boxing man through and through and in hindsight did a lot for the sport, as soon as Newbon left his post as head of sport at ITV so did boxing.

Ed Robinson is a boxing nut and loves the sport, but would he be where he is if it wasn't for his background and education?

If someone gave Adam Smith some rugby union commentators job - he would be out of the boxing like a flash!

I find it quite remarkable how Adam Smith can come in for criticism on this forum.

He has been instrumental in making sure boxing stays on our screens and in addition making sure the quality of boxing programmes Sky produce improve.

He has done a bloody fantastic job and he should be applauded for it.

I agree with your last comment - its going to be embarassing if Matthew Hatton pulls off the win and no one has shown the fight.

"Real Boxing Man" what does this even mean?? So most of the forum are real boxing men because they watch boxing?

Can't you like boxing for whatever reason and at whatever stage of your life? One of my colleagues runs an amateur gym three nights a week and judges at least one show a week yet has no interest in the pro game. Does that make him not a real boxing man because he doesn't come on here and comment on obscure british title fights?

Give Adam a break. He may have a privilaged past, I don't know and don't care, you cant hate on someone for doing a job and trying to make a positive change to the sport. He's brought back ringside, he's got people like bob mee, woodhall, mgguigan etc back involved, he's had Froch in the studio and he's listening to the fans.

Hate it or love it, he's trying. Sure I'd love to be in his position, which fan wouldn't but hes got experience and has built a love of the game. Would you find him or Ed Robinson at an amateur show on a Thursday night, probably not, but my guess is most people on here wouldn't be found there either.
