Hand wraps - compulsory or not?

Post by WelshDevil »

Chatting to a mate who is an avid follower of the sport and he was in live attendance for Steve Holdsworth vs Ricky Beumont many years ago. Holdsworths dad was the promoter, steve lost a 6 round decision.

All fair but Steve took off his gloves and didn't have any handwrapping - is this allowed now? Is wrapping compulsory?

The rules only stipulate the following -

3.22 Bandages are permitted for the protection of hands. These must be 2 inch wide soft bandages and 1 inch zink oxide plaster. The tape must not be applied over the knuckles.

It does not state that the weareing of bandages is mandatory.

I know in amateur boxing they HAVE to wear bandages as not long ago a young lad was DQ after the corner took hos gloves off and he had no bandages on.

I've seen a few boys go in without wraps. Some journeymen just put on gloves, go out , get.out pointed , paid & fornicate off home.

It would be crazy not to wear wraps your hands get smashed up enough taped up, I think I would prefer not to wear a gumshield

I remember Steve Holdsworth saying he used to break his hands a lot, maybe that had something to do with it.

Why can't tape be applied to the knuckles?

I wouldn't want to wear a gumshield either..... tried wearing one playing rugby and hated it, would be even worse boxing I'd imagine.

The first time I sparred, they could barely do up the headguard (I have a big nugget), the gum-shield seemed to double in size and dig into the back of my mouth.....and my breathing was heavy.....clostrophobic? moi? you betcha....I hate gum-shields, but wouldn't be without one!

I cant think why anyone would not want to wear hand wraps when boxing, even when doing bag work, although i dont know why they bother in the amateurs, the amount they allow u to wear offers litttle or no protection whatsoever.

And often the only punch that scores is the "touch-gloves".

The clip shows one hand with and one hand without! It is unclear whether one had already been cut off already

It shows him having both the glove and wrap being cut off.

If you google pictures his name you will see plenty of pictures of his hands post-fight, some with wraps, some not. If you then see which are wrap-less, just youtube the fight (as I did) and see the wraps there as his gloves are removed.
