Sky poor quality schedule

Post by leforge »

I think this schedule needs a thread on its own Its not very inspriring!
Sat 5th
Gary Sykes v Carl Johanneson
Sat 12 WBO Super-Featherweight Title.
Ricky Burns v Joseph Laryea
Sat 19 Commonwealth Super-Featherweight Title
Liam Walsh v John Kays
Wed 23 Super-Middleweights Prizefighter
Sat 26 Commonwealth Welterweight Title
Denton Vassell v Bethuel Ushona
Sat April 2 Murray v Ouazghari

The best match up is Sykes v Johanneson and Walsh v Kays. Prizefighter aside the other are not very good. Is this the improvement under Smith regime!!

laryea is a bad opponent, but this weekend's fight is good, two decent commonwealth scraps as well, walsh is exciting and vassell is in with an unbeaten fighter.

murray's fight is a joke though, what a huge letdown after all the mitchell talk, that's just typical of boxing and no wonder that the likes of the BBC and ITV dont get involved when it's those type of matchups. not the step forward you expected in his career after moving to frank.

That's genuinely a piss poor rota of B-level fights, especially as we're still in the shadow of that utter joke called Haye vs Harrison.

I give that schedule, two thumbs down.

But we have a commentary team of 9 though. The Murray and vassell bill have weak undercards too.

Sykes-Johannson is a good fight. The rest are poor match ups. Not a good showing at all.

But that fight is not the best fight that could be made it should be Sykes Buckland and everyone knows that.

"And on Ringside tonight, Jonny and I look forward to the return of Manchester's John Murray against a big punching, tough talking Spaniard looking to cause an upset...We catch up with Murray ahead of his bout...training going well...dangerous opponent...important not to underestimate...will be an explosive night live and exclusive on SKY HD...disappointed about Mitchel but hopefully new promoter can get title fight...but definitely not looking past the opponent...you can see all the action live an exclusive on SKY HD...etc etc"

Only Sykes bill excites but to be honest very nonplussed by the rest. Worryingly takes us up towards the summer too which is traditionally very slow domestically

Christ, when you see the schedule presented as a list like that it really is worrying. The only must-see fight for me on the schedule is Sykes-Johanneson, the rest strike me as distinctly so-what.

It is poor, but you have to lay some of the blame at the door of the promoter. SKY are enabling the promoter to a degree but they both need each other so they both have to take the blame.

I'd say Sky are enabling the promoter totally Orb — the promoters wouldn't run these shows at all without TV money. Personally, I think this looks like a quality control issue.

The one that sticks out the most is Burns' second defence of his world title. Let's make no bones about this, he's fighting a guy who was probably not anywhere near the WBO top ten a few months ago and would probably struggle to get sanctioned for a Commonwealth title fight. If you had been abducted by aliens 2 years ago and beamed back to earth today, you would assume that Burns was still Commonwealth champion and this was his 8th defence and he was headlining the York Hall or a lesuire centre in Glasgow.

Indeed. I don't know if, or to what degree, Adam Smith's hands are tied by deals that were in place before he became head of boxing at Sky. It will be interesting to see what happens when he is able to make his own deals, but when I look at that schedule my heart sinks. British boxing has so much to offer at the moment, but you would never know it with those fights in the TV 'shop window'. Genuinely sad.

The good thing is that boxing is on most weeks now.

OK, I'm sure we'd all rather the bills were better too. Perhaps when current contractual stuff has expired, Sky will simply tell promoters to do one if they can't offer decent quality bills. And if the bills fall apart because 'that's boxing' well, they get paid less.

Absolutely piss poor if I'm being honest. Sykes vs Johansson the only one that truly appeals to me.

June 2012 is a long time to wait Ian and personally I really don't think any old boxing is better than none. 'Any old' boxing can have a negative impact on the sport's well being, which is not great at the moment anyway. Us anoraks might tune into this quality of show but I can't see any reason why the uncommitted would. If the fighters and fights weren't out there it would be a different scenario, but that isn't the case at all. Existing deals or not, I find it hard to believe that Sky can't force the issue with the promoters to some degree. That bunch of fights are just schedule-fillers in my opinion. Is it too much to ask for even one genuinely meaningful fight a month when you look at the British talent pool today (and not have to pay 15 quid extra for it)?

I love that SKy shows British boxing at grass roots level from leisure centres etc. That is great for the sport, but if they show that virtually EVERY week then it isn't good. We should have a mixture of British shows laced with the best fights from the world scene. I would rather watch a good world fight than an average British level fight for a 'commonwealth' title or whatever tag they can put on it to make it seem legit.

Sky recently rejected Bellew v TBA and demanded he rematch Mckenzie so regardless of 'current contracts' they can definitely exercise quality control.

Seems they are choosing not to looking at that list thoguh, a terrible shame
