You have to imagine the biggest market outside the US has to be the UK

Steve Bunce must have an idea of the rough cost of the regional broadcast rights to these shows - didn't he have Setanta's boxing angel (RIP) on speed dial?

Do you not find it strange talking about boxing on the BBC? Given they don't show it? I know the BBC is supposed to be this impartial thing that just reports what is going on but it seems odd to me to devote an hour to a sport that they will never show. I've never really thought about it before now.

Way too much talk, not enough fights. It's painful watching Johnny Nelson shitting his pants in the studio trying to forge a career as presenter and sucking up to guests like Steve Foster.

Too right. I don't dislike Johnny, but he's been presenting that show for years now, and not got any better at all.
He eagery talks up everything Sky show like it's the 2nd coming of Ali/Frazier, garbles his words and basically talks a load of bollox. He's sooooo desperate to impress his bosses, week in week out, you can't take anything he says seriously at all.

Sky isn't a public service channel, they aren't doing us a favour. What about us being loyal to them by continuing to pay the subscriptions that keep them in jobs? £50-odd a month is a sizeable amount in a recession and as boxing fans, weekly action is what we're paying for. We also have every right to tell them what we want because they take our money — we're customers and we're always right.

If only Premier could find a few quid to put out a Boxing Hour...it is odd talking about boxing on the BBC but I can assure you that the 'listen-again' figures for the show are outstanding...there is still room inside SKY's show for something resembling the anarchy of the Setanta hour...non-scripted, opinionated, fan-friendly, funny, direct and quick.
By the way tonight's show on BBC London 94.9 is a belter.

While I am no expert in TV deals, a problem in this seems to be the price. Gareth Williams told me yesterday that Matthew's deal did not include the UK TV rights and he said the worldwide rights are held by HBO.
I would have expected the Hattons or Golden Boy to make a deal with Sky, for the joint longterm benefit, but maybe HBO are not so bothered about doing a cutprice deal.
I will ask around at the presser later to see if there are any more answers.

Cheers Ron, I'm sure any insight would be appreciated. There seem to be a number of opinions as to who actually owns the rights to sell, as you will see from earlier posts. One theory is that the rights belong to GBP not HBO. I have no idea.

My understanding is that TV stations have to bid or buy the rights to broadcast for the territory in question [from the promoter]. It's why HBO keep bidding ridiculous sums for Berto fights.

SKY would have to make an offer to the promoter and essentially borrow or share the feed from HBO (in this case).

I am pretty sure that the international broadcast rights are held by the promoter. The promoter does his deal with the broadcaster in whatever country and supplies what is called a "world feed". (That is, the live transmission with a commentary team hired by the promoter.) Don King's "world feed" broadcasts featured Bob Sheridan, of course. Commentators hired for "world feed" commentary by Arum and Golden Boy include Dave Bontempo (who seems to get a lot of work in this field), Rich Marotta and Alan Massengale. Kathy Duva (Main Events) is loyal to a veteran named Dick Landis, often teamed with Bontempo. There is nothing to prevent a broadcaster (Sky, say) purchasing the "world feed" but using their own studio commentary instead of taking the American commentary, although I am not sure how the technology works there.

I think I'm right in saying they just dub over. Sometimes on the SKY broadcasts from German cards you can hear the German track ever so distinctly in the background.

Just to add to the 'who holds the rights mix' - I understand it isn't black and white. For example, I know that ESPN insist on worldwide rights to any of their FNF bills. This recently created a sticking point and led to one bout (it definitely involved Don King and might have been Tavouris Cloud) being pulled from ESPN FNF

Presumably that is how and why ESPN UK show it for 'free'

Anyhow, on another thread Ed Robinson confirmed that Hatton-Alvarez is delayed on Sunday early evening. One of Elle Macphereson's boobs, if you like.
