ABA Champ Anthony Joshuafor intent to supply

Post by Chambers2 »

One of Britain's big Olympic hopes has been charged with a drugs offence. The super-heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua, 21, a leading contender for GB's 2012 team, will appear in court at Hendon on Wednesday accused of possession of an illegal substance with intent to supply. It is a double blow for the sport, as an investigation has been ordered into an unrelated allegation of the use of recreational drugs at a training camp for women boxers.
Londoner Joshua, the current ABA champion and a member of the Sheffield-based GB Development Squad, is one of the hottest prospects in amateur boxing.
The 6ft 6in, 16st KO specialist from Finchley recently turned down a £50,000 offer to turn professional in order to concentrate on winning a place in the London Games. Last night the British Amateur Boxing Association said: "We have been made aware of an incident [and] we are conducting an investigation. Given the nature of the charge, we've suspended the person involved."
Joshua, British-born of Nigerian parents, won the senior ABA title in only his 18th bout last year.

He's always been in ABAs, just suspended from GB squad.

not anymore - i believe the board have a very strong disinclination to EVER license anyone who has a drugs conviction.

if this is true it is a real tragedy to see someone with an apparently bright future chuck it all away.

Seems a stupid policy as it is taking away a legal career option.

Well he's still in the ABA's so I am guessing he has not been convicted?

If I were him, I would now be seeking a definitive answer from Team GB about where I stood. If they told me the prospect of a slot at the olympics had gone, I'd be on the phone to the Hertfordshire Massive the same day and looking to make my pro debut on 21 May.
Could he represent Nigeria instead, or does a conviction scupper that avenue as well?

If there was the slightest possibility of aquiring an olympic medal, he should take it.

Should just about avoid getting a sentence of immediate custody, if that is the case.

If he does avoid custody hopefully will take a sympathetic view of any pro license application and give the lad a chance to redeem himself.

Alternatively he may go not guilty, have a trial, win it and clear his name entirely.

No doubt people will post that "it's only a bit of weed, what's the harm?" or similar. The guy only has to knuckle down for another 18 months and he could be set-up for life. A British 91kg+ gold, in London, would secure a stonking contract in the pros. If he's blown that for the sake of a few hundred quids' worth of weed, he's a cretin.
Very true, they get a pretty decent salary being part of the squads too. Enough to ensure you don't have to do stupid things like this
