What the heck happened there? Looks like Lovell gets hit
with an uppercut, stumbles, then gets tripped by the ref
and turned around?

The video quality isn't very good,if this fight was on DVD you can go frame by frame to see what happened,
but watch again during the last 10 seconds of the fifth round just before Lovello
turns away from the"effects" of a Norton uppercut.
It was a pretty well known sports blooper back in the late 1970's.
