Anyone else think its went downhill since claude left? i personally dont like the way they praise fighters one fight then slag them the next. how many times have these writers stepped in the ring? i think they should get some respect for people doing a hard job.

Visually, the layout, the graphics, the photos and so on; it has really improved. It is still a must-buy for the serious fan.

But on the negative side, the writing has gone down awfully. Tris DIxon's writing is dreadful, cliche laden, uninspiring dross. I quite like the new approch in terms of 'guest columnist' and the pie chart...not everything works but it's good to try.

I Like the 60 second interview though some of the questions are bland.

But as a writer he is poor. I believe he 'boxed'. Not sure what kind of fights..and his opening editorial about how he 'toured' the US boxing gyms before realising he was a better writer than fighter was egotistical and risible. Like he was some kind of travelling warrior gloriously toiling in the US gyms. What nonsense. As he wrote If he thinks he was a better fighter than writer, he must have been a truly dreadful fighter as his writings is, at best pedestrian. I've seen him on a you tube video and he can barely hit the pads properly.

He come across quite well on TV but he sounds and acts almost exactly like claude used to - which is fine, claude came accross well... but it's very odd.
He should go to writing school - I'm serious. He needs to learn to put some decent prose together.

And what was that Flexen article about Mathew and Ricky Hatton about??? He spends half the article talking about himslef and his brother and imagining various possible scenarios....WTF is that about??? Ibuy BN to read about boxing not Flexen's family. Awful. Just make some intro about brotherly jealousy and move on.

Just a short one – I'm gratified to know you felt my article was 'ok' so cheers for that, but print on the photos? Do you mean the pull-quotes? What's your beef with pull-quotes?

Hmm, if by half the article, you mean the opening two paragraphs of a four-page piece, then your definition is skewed to say the least. It made sense in the context of the piece in my opinion and several other readers liked it, but each to their own. As for Tris' boxing skills and experience, what does that have to do with his writing? You say he portrays himself as a 'travelling warrior' then proceed to quote him admitting he was a better writer than fighter – so is he humble or egotistical, make up your mind. No-one's perfect, maybe you're better in the ring than Tris (Nick would know) but are you a better writer than the man you label 'pedestrian' or than the guy who writes about his own family too much?

Apologies. I was in bad mood and being very negative and went in way too hard. Hard day; no excuses. I just picked on one article of yours. As for Tris; I am being hard - yes. I really enjoyed his articles previously when he travelled around the States. The choice of subjects was good.

I still think Tris is not the best writer, editing skills are of course a different matter. I think it's a positive thing for readership of younger generation that the magazine style has been modernised - I am old school in my approach though. I read books from the middle part of 20th century and so perhaps I prefer a less modern writing style.

John Dennen I find a good read, as BOb Mee and McCrae. I may or may not be a better writer or fighter than the above; but that is not my trade. I am certainly not a better writer than Martin Amis but I still think it's OK to criticise some of his writing. I, BN staff (and almost everyone on this forum) is an inferior boxer to Klitschko/Calzaghe/Hatton etc etc but we all still, as fans (or in your case a writer) are entitled to be able to criticise and have an opinion, and it is a valid one. Look at the grief given to Paul SMith, an excellent boxer and likeable person. You cannot make an omelette with breaking a few eggs (<- a dreadful cliche, but makes the point....brownosing and being flattering to everyone is ultimately a worthless opinion.)

As for BN I have read it for 25 years and only missed issues when away abroad. I am a committed boxing fan, and as stated BN is a MUST-read for all trade and serious fans..... but when being objective we can still be allowed to criticise something we love, as we are passionate.

I apologise for going too hard and appreciate that writers from BN and Boxing Monthly and top boxers post and answer questions/criticisms from the niche fan.

some minor niggles among a great read.

danny flexen's intros are getting a little overblown as someone has already stated. we get 150 words on something completely unrelated to the fight before the boxer's names even get mentioned! his previews are very good but this is getting a bit too much. he seems to have started doing this after donald mcrae's articles began to be published in there.

not a big fan of the versus section, not because it isn't a good idea - it is. the problem for me is that the writers photos are bigger than the ones of the boxers. i feel the spotlight should primarily be on the boxers. this is also an issue with state of the game. put the subject's photo at the top, not the writers.

i prefer the reader's letters at the back, purely because this is a colourful section and should come after all the serious stuff.

guest columnists are very good and tris' column seems more in tune with the fans than his predecessor.

photo of the week is, for me, two pages wasted. it should either be dropped or shifted to the centre pages (with adverts on the back of it) so that we can take it out as a poster.

60 second interview seems to have too narrow a scope. it would be more interesting to me if it involved boxers around the world. i'd love to know what the japanese movie equivalent of scarface is called!

Despite my quick winge, I still think BN is still a brilliant magazine and well worth the money.
