ALVAREZ - HATTON spoiler *** SPOILER ***
Well an incredibly game Mathew Hatton went the distance but lost every round against Alvarez. Canelo won every round. Hatton never stopped trying to win though - there were a couple of fouls and Mathew took a knee both times; but when called to fight - he just got back into it. Alvarez lost a point midway through the fight for a punch on the break I think.
He was just too small - he couldn't really hurt Saul. ALvarez seemd a bit easy to hit; and at this stage is a little overhyped. He's young of course.
Hatton did take a lot of punishmnet, but defended the point of his chin well - a lot of shots hit the top of his skull. He was very classy in interview and said he'll go down to welter as was expected.
Hatton made a good payday and will get recognition for his toughness and gameness if nothing else.

Surprised me and credit to him for lasting the distance, will watch the fight tonight and see but it sounds as if he was outclassed but very game reading several reports.
Some are saying he was there for the taking but Alvarez failed to pull the trigger a few times, guess will have to see on that.
However he obviously showed great heart and credit to him for that.

To be honest I am not surprised in the slightest that it went the distance. Although Matthew is below world class he has always been a tough lad.

Reggaereggae, where did you see this? I'll be watching it sometime tonight once I have prized the remote off the bread knife because she'll be watching 'Dancing on Ice'.
In too deep there, methinks, let alone the fact that Ryan Rhodes should have been competing for that belt, but we all know how bent the WBC are.

Re: ALVAREZ - HATTON spoiler *** SPOILER ***
Credit to Matthew, he took his best and saw the final bell.
Got to say, never been blown away by Alvarez. Even Chavez could beat him if he went back to 154.

Re: ALVAREZ - HATTON spoiler *** SPOILER ***
Fair play to Matthew, did as much as was expected and wasn't humiliated in the manner a number of critics of the fight expected.
As for Alvarez, while allowances can be made for his age, he still looks very raw. High punch output and a lot of "power punches" but Hatton never really looked hurt or wobbled. Considering the size advantage both on the scales and on the night, the speed advantage and the class disparity, Alvarez really didn't demonstrate that he is currently world class. Light Middle is pretty weak outside of Williams and Cotto (I count Pacquiao as a Welter), and I don't see him beating either of them any time soon. Against someone a little more dangerous offensively than Hatton he could be in trouble. But, as I said, he is young, he has plenty of time to learn and develop and he entertains, so it could be a fun ride to follow him.

Got to say that Matthew showed true bottle in lasting the distance, but i can see Alvarez losing sooner rather than later. He has got to improve his head movement or the top guys will beat him

Overhyped? are you talking about the same Hatton here ?
Hatton deserves serious credit, he boxed and moved well didn't let the fact his punches were doing ZERO damage and used his ring nouce and experience to a tee.
He gets plenty of stick but he's developed into a very good boxer and showed it last night
He pissed in the face of Golden Boy promotions who flew a 'Hatton' over as meat for the ginger beast.
Oscar Dela Hoya looked like someone had walked over his grave at the final bell.
Well done that man.

How often did the Sky team mention about Alvarez ginger hair? I turned the sound off half way through the first round due to utter tosh spouted as usual, I think within 5 minutes I heard "hair like an irishman" and "looks like he comes from dublin" shut the fornicate up for gawds sake you fornicating eejit. ![[icon_witsend.gif] :witzend:](./images/smilies/icon_witsend.gif)
Re: ALVAREZ - HATTON spoiler *** SPOILER ***
Hatton actually had good success for large parts of most rounds. But you could tell from 30 seconds in it would be like attacking a wall with a pea shooter. Alvarez would wait and reply with the bigger shots as each round went on and would back Hatton up, especially to the body.
I think Canelo expected the 'Magic' to fade, and take him out late but only once did his legs go and he didn't really look like being stopped. Credit to Hatton, got himself in great condition and didn't stop going for it, but Alvarez was just too big for him.
One important lesson from the bout: Alvarez has no intention of working on his defences. Forget him being only 20 - that's his style now, take 1 to land one. Will make for some exciting fights in the future though, Cotto would be a cracker.
Little disappointed the judges didn't give Hatton a round though, thought he won one around the 4th or 5th.

Just watched it and gave Hatton a share of a couple of rounds, he is game as they come. All credit to him.
I don't see Saul as a future great but stranger things have happened.
Re: ALVAREZ - HATTON spoiler *** SPOILER ***
Scorecards a bit harsh but you get nothing out there, I mean look at the Mayweather-Ricky Hatton scorecards they give you nothing in US if you are the away fighter. I gave Matthew the 5th round, he outworked Alvarez clearly and also gave him a share of I think it was 7th and 8th rounds I can;t remember.
After that Alvarez beat him clearly but not as impressively as I expected. Matt Hatton emerges from this with great credit, he used his tidy boxing skills and decent defence to always be in the fight and never really looked like getting stopped.

Re: ALVAREZ - HATTON spoiler *** SPOILER ***
Hatton did himself proud - Alvarez was far to big, he was a full on light middle.
I think hatton lost the fight but won far more - alvarez looked demoralised, everything he threw hatton just came back firing, if he hadnt had that extra size and power hatton would have been able to stay infront of him and out work him.
i would be suprised if that peformance doesnt lead to some big welter weight fights for magic.

Re: ALVAREZ - HATTON spoiler *** SPOILER ***
I completely dismissed Hatton beforehand and didn't think he would last 4 rounds.
He backed up his words though and fought the best fight he could. He showed pretty good awareness in there. He was never close to getting taken out except perhaps right at the end of the fight.
I suspect Alvarez will look more impressive in the future when faced with something to fear.

Credit Credit Credit to Hatton there. He gave it a good go. Outgunned from the start, but didn't lose heart - showed tremendous fitness and great bottle.
I don't like it when fighters just stay content with surviving - going the distance. Matt can hold his head up high and say he gave it all he good, every round he was competitive - scoring didn't reflect the fight.
Compare his effort to that of Jennings or Lockett in world title fights. He gave it his all, just didn't have the power to tend Alverez - but at least he didn't just try and survive, he tried to win in every round.
Lets see Hatton vs Brook.

Re: ALVAREZ - HATTON spoiler *** SPOILER ***
Alvarez looked very one dimensional to me. no angles, no faints, no boxing savvy. He reminded me of lacy before he fought calzaghe - good power, good range of shots, strong as an ox - but its only a matter of time until he gets out pointed.Kilburn wrote:I completely dismissed Hatton beforehand and didn't think he would last 4 rounds.

And i reckon Hatton beats brook!!
Re: ALVAREZ - HATTON spoiler *** SPOILER ***
They should probably steer clear of slick boxers for Alvarez.
I think the Cotto fight is the right way to go.

Re: ALVAREZ - HATTON spoiler *** SPOILER ***
Your scorecard is nuts. Hatton clearly lost every round. He did better in some rounds than others, but it is impossible for me to even score a level round (aside from the deduction). Yes, Hatton threw 13 more punches in the 5th, but Alvarez landed 15 more punches. Canelo landed harder punches and more punches in every round.TheCobra wrote:Scorecards a bit harsh but you get nothing out there, I mean look at the Mayweather-Ricky Hatton scorecards they give you nothing in US if you are the away fighter. Tons of heart and a great chin from Hatton, but just outgunned.

I don't think it is nuts to give Hatton a round and score another couple even. Alvarez had a poor workrate in a lot of rounds and Hatton will have done enough to win or get an even round in a lot of people's opinions.crusader wrote:Your scorecard is nuts.
