Alberto Jiminez
Anyone remember this guy? He beat Robbie Regan- He was a fabulous infighter and his fight with Regan was just sensational at times. The variety of his work was exceptional.
Anyone find any vids on youtube of him- got him fighting some thai, but he was far better vs Regan and Matlala

Re: Alberto Jiminez
Heres his draw against Carlos Salazar from 1996. Jimenez was probably a bit past his best in this one but he still looked very good. The crowd were mental, great atmosphere. Surprised there's no footage of his fight with Regan.

Re: Alberto Jiminez
He was a dude, as I mentioned in the "Name the British World champs" thread.
I've got the Regan fight on VHS, somewhere. See if I can dig it out & get it online somehow mate.
If not, look on the Youtube channel of the "Balatazarbrothers", which I think is respected Hispanic fight-game figure (& Boxrec poster) Frank Baltazar & sons' channel. Last time I checked there were four or five of his early fights on there (maybe even the split decision loss to Too Sharp).

Jiminez only took up boxing at 16, which is a good age to start. Leonard started at 16.
Re: Alberto Jiminez
jiminez v robbie regan was an excellent fight. they really dug in heavy shots. regan was doing really well in the 9th round, after which he was pulled out. obviously he had taken too much of a beating in the previous 8 sessions. regan obviously went on to win the WBO bantam title from daniel jiminez, in another exciting bout. so this is a good win.
jiminez's best win seems to be the stoppage of baby jake matlala. i bet this will have been a tough inside war. it seems to be a hard fight to get hold of.
alberto mixed it in good class - salazar, mentioned above, lost very narrow fights to korean slugger sung kil moon and a young barrera (on split and majority verdicts). perhaps his best result was a split decision defeat to mark "too sharp" johnson in 1993. has anyone seen this bout, is it as close as it was scored or was jiminez - clearly the home fave at the great western forum - scored a bit generously?
fights with ricardo lopez and yuri arbachakov would have been cracking battles, i'm sure. but jiminez probably had his share of tear ups, no?

I'd like to see the Mark Johnson fight, both boxers were good to watch. Jimenez was one of those boxers that seemed to flow with the punches and made differcult things look easy.
Re: Alberto Jiminez
what happened in that bout - did jiminez fade late? did he struggle with the long arms of the man whose name reminded reg gutteridge of "cat food"?orbtastic wrote:The bout with Kittakasem was good.

I remember Jimenez-Regan. Regan tried hsi heart out Jimenez was just a bit better in every department. Regan was a class act, I was really pleased for him when he won the WBO Bantamweight title. The punch he demolished Jeddou was a belter.
I was surprised Jimenez never really ended up doing more than he did he was brilliant against Regan.

Hearing Muangchai Kittikasem's name reminded me of the Russian Yuri Arbachakov who beat the Thai boxer for the WBC title. Yuri was a brick wall of a flyweight, so strong. Shame he never got a big fight, as i think he was NO1 at the time.
Re: Alberto Jiminez
Kittikasem was a big puncher but as chinny as they come.

Kittikasem and Arbachakov both featured repeatedly on ITVs late night mid week Fight Night shows.Old bones Ian wrote:Hearing Muangchai Kittikasem's name reminded me of the Russian Yuri Arbachakov who beat the Thai boxer for the WBC title. They were an invaluable window into world boxing for me as a young boxing fan.
I wish we had something similar or terrestrial tv these days...
Re: Alberto Jiminez
The fight night series was excellent I remember as a teenager watching all the thai fights plus the up & coming John Davison fights. Great education in boxing.

Excuse my ignorance, but why is that the case?Jiminez only took up boxing at 16, which is a good age to start. Leonard started at 16.
I presumed boxing was like other sports in that the earlier someone takes it up, the better?
Re: Alberto Jiminez
It is a personal thing but I hate to see young kiddies, still to develop natural strength, slugging it out in contests that are all about who can land more. By 16, a boy's strength and power are coming through, so the action is less toe-to-toe, and there is still time to develop skill. I believe the best time to start boxing are between the ages of 14 and 16.ApolloCreed wrote:Excuse my ignorance, but why is that the case?Jiminez only took up boxing at 16, which is a good age to start. Re: Alberto Jiminez
yeah ITV had a good program showing brilliant fighters like chitalada, arbachakov etc. the only drawback was that for longer contests, the fights were often shown in long highlights.pyenest77 wrote:The fight night series was excellent I remember as a teenager watching all the thai fights plus the up & coming John Davison fights. Re: Alberto Jiminez
arbachakov was in only his 2nd year as a pro when he broke down kittikassem. he was such a complete fighter after that amateur education (european and world championship winner). 2 almost perfect destructions of kittikassem, brutal stoppages both.Old bones Ian wrote:Hearing Muangchai Kittikasem's name reminded me of the Russian Yuri Arbachakov who beat the Thai boxer for the WBC title. arbachakov was sort of the flyweight tszyu, i believe the first of the soviets to win a pro world title. ring mag had him in their top 5 p4p list in 1995. like tszyu he didn't like sluggers. his fight with the korean nam hoon cha was wildly exciting and probably took a lot out of him.
i also really enjoyed arbachakov v chartchai sasakul (the thai who won the rematch and then lost to pacquiao). arbachakov outclassed chartchai early then got drawn into a toe to toe war in the mid-late stages. sadly he lost the title in his 10th defense. one of those fighters like don curry who was brilliant for a relatively short time and didn't quite achieve enough for the hall of fame career their offensive skills seemed to promise.
