Adrian Dodson in Prizefighter!!!

Post by Old bones Ian »

Well 41 year old Adrian Dodson is trying to make the supermiddle prizefighter, he makes his return in a 4 rounder this weekend in Liverpool. If he comes through that unscathed and in some sort of form the Board will allow him to enter Prizefighter.

Dodson last fought in 2003, if he makes it to prizefighter he will join the other oldies in Patrick J. Maxwell and Robin Reid.

Yeah Adrian is 41 now and says he has been busy bringing up his two lads, wants one more crack at the big time.

“I’ve been a single dad of two boys for the last eight years so obviously they have been my priority.
“But now they are much older and things are stable in my personal life, I can come back and deal with some unfinished business.
“I feel that I underachieved from the standard I set and this is a very good platform for me to get back into the big picture. Experience will be vital in this tournament because there are a lot of talented young guns who are hungry to impress and trying to add my name to their records and I’ll be trying to remind them just who I am.”

Lets hope Dodson's not biting anything else, like he did in his first career.

Not to stir but wasn't Adrian in a bit of trouble recently?

I can remember him winning the ABAs around 20 years ago; he was the business.

Yes, he was Adrian Carew and he was some fighter (I'm sure he went to an Olympics very young, not sure who he represented).

Carew/Dodson...ABA title, schoolboy title boxing for the Lynn, 1988 in Seoul for Guyana when he was 17, then part of Nigel Benn's touring party, 1992 in Barcelona at welterweight when he wanted to be light-middle...he was the only Brit or Irish boxer to actually win the first-ever Olympic qualification tournament before the 1992 Games. So many Dodson/Carew memories.
Outspoken, old-school shorts, dangerous, frustrating and always, always entertaining!
I will call and try and get him on the BBC London show this Thursday.

Adios.

Patrick J Maxwell, Tobias Webb, Wayne Reid and Jahmaine Smyle.

Lots of punchers in that lot. Maxwell i remember could whack, but had that 1 round loss to Nick Okoth, was odd as Maxwell kind of refused that he had been knocked out.

I seriously looked up to Dodson when i was 12-15   odd he was Amazing different class was only Wealther L-Middle and putting over Super Heavy's in the Gym :o Donovan Holeness, was the ABA finalist twice, could of won them and been good as a Pro but imo didnt have that Killer instict would hurt someone and back off. I think Dodson was he's own worst Enemy would'nt listen to what ANY trainer had to say, he'd say what punches he'd want to throw on the pads etc. I think thats why he didnt furfull his ture potenial ended up just getting Taxi driver's, keep fitter's to take him on the Pads and didnt have a trainer in his Corner a few times during fights.... see Him at the Running track 12-18 months ago said he was making a Come back. Whe i see him he was Massive, a bottom half like how Mike Tyson has turned out. He will do seriously great to make S-Middle...

If he has even got Half of what he had Back in the Day he will be seriously dangerous :box: :box:

He was a bit special back in the day - he won the NY Golden Gloves when it was a massive achievement to win it. They held him in huge regard in New York and two Olympic Games is a great thing to do. At the Lynn club they were in fear of him as he was ruthless in sparring. Massive talent at the time. He was in my corner when I boxed on a white-collar boxing show at Gleason's back in 2000 with Gary Stretch as his assistant. He was a good trainer.

Didn't they try to hype up a rivalry with Robin Reid back after the '92 Games when they both turned pro?

he was a great prospect but was thrown in too early vs winky and never seemed to recover from it.

stopped honeyghan on the benn-mcclellan undercard, didn't he?

saw him stop john mbosco on big fight live, thought he was going to go all the way. also saw calzaghe-delaney on this program, around same time, and thought he was gong nowhere!

yeah, i seem to recall Delaney looked like he'd been 'hit by a truck' as someone on a forum once put it

I'm doing all of this from memory, as I can't be bothered to look it up, but I'm sure Delaney was undefeated at the time and was fighting in London so Calzaghe had to face a barrage of hardcore Delaney fans, but just took him apart completely.
Unless my memory is playing tricks on me it was one of his most impressive performances in the early part of his career.
