WSB - World Series of Boxing
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
I'm starting to see some home cooking with the judging. The bouts are close with the visiting boxers clearly winning a round or two and being shut out on the scorecard and things like that. That will not help the WSB succeed.
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Heard in the Hood - Eric Parthen and Jeff Benz (Matadores' general manager) were both fired, however Andrew Madigan was kept. Boxers got a $700 (or so) a month pay cut. They can compete in US boxing events leading to the Olympics (Golden Gloves and US Championships) but have lost their amateur status because they are licensed as pros. Why is it the athletes are the ones who always get shafted!

But this is just LA right? I guess even if you are in a state that doesn't require pro license, if you want to box in CA you have too. So after Olympics, they are done with amateur competition.boxmel wrote:Heard in the Hood - Eric Parthen and Jeff Benz (Matadores' general manager) were both fired, however Andrew Madigan was kept. Amateur requirements and pay cuts are for all franchises. There are only two states - CA and another - where you have to be licensed as a pro.But this is just LA right? Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Just noticed, two franchises changes names.
Korean franchise in the World Series of Boxing is changing its identity from the Incheon Red Wings to Pohang Poseidons ahead of its next home match on January 28th, when the team will face the Astana Arlans at the Pohang Indoor Sport Gymnasium.
Boxing Federation of Russia, the country's top sports club Dynamo is set to take over the Moscow franchise in the World Series of Boxing.

Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
The other state is Florida. Memphis team boxes their home matches in Mississippi which has a weak commission and it does not require the boxers to get licensed. However, the WSB is a pro league and allowing them to compete in the Olympics is one thing, but allowing them to compete in other amateur competitions is another animal all together. I believe USAB needs to rethink allowing the WSB boxers to compete in the US Championships as well since they would still be allowing amateurs to compete against pros.boxmel wrote:Amateur requirements and pay cuts are for all franchises. Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Being licensed as pros, getting paid better than most pros (well at least before the pay cut), and many other things show that they are in fact professional boxers. They are being officiated by professional refs and judges who are not amateur officials. If they have lost their amateur status then it should be for everything in the United States including the Golden Gloves and U.S. Championships.
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
I hope the WSB and WSB Americas make some changes. First, be careful about cutting the wages of the boxers. That sends the wrong message and will make it more difficult to recruit top boxers. 2nd, the bouts need to be carried live on TV. The bouts should be on the same day so fans can know when to be prepared to watch. Don't have the teams have the same break period. Have bouts each week with two team having off on a particular weekend but the other two boxing. Finally, the broadcast needs to have some info for the public about future match-ups and talk about the other continents. Try to build the World concept a little. Show highlights of bouts from the rest of the world occasionally so that the boxing public in the U.S. might want to watch the playoffs and individual championships.
The upcoming match tonight, LA vs Miami, has some intriguing match-ups but when will I be able to see it? I would be more inclined to watch if it were live.

Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
From what I can tell Miami Gallos have lost their permit to stage boxing. The Florida boxing commission have problems with the WSB and the match with Memphis has been postponed.
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Hmmm - I wonder what the problems are and if they will spread to and impact the LA Matadores. Stay tuned, I guess. The Florida boxing commission have problems with the WSB
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
I am watching the WSB on Vme network. It is the January 30, 2011 match with the Miami Gallos at the LA Matadors. The first bout Raushee Warren looked good and won easily over Luis Miguel Diaz. However, it was still an entertaining bout. Warren also suffered a small cut over his right eye.
The 2nd bout featured Eric Fowler vs Leonid Malkov. What a war! These two both have good offenses, but forget about their defenses. They both threw a lot of punches and each got hit by a lot of punches. Very entertaining. I'm sure most fans would watch that bout over and over if given the chance. The winner would probably change each time as they are very closely matched. Fowler won a split decision.
Ken Egan vs V Shabransky was an ugly bout. Both guys are very skilled, but they held and roughed each other up a lot. Shabransky suffered a cut by his left eye which bled through several rounds. I did notice that the LA Matadors corner appeared to use Adrenaline or something on their boxers' cuts. I didn't notice the Miami coaches using anything on Malkov's cut.
The final bout was Craig Lewis vs David Imoesiri. It was another bout with a lot of holding. David won by Unanimous Decision.
It was an entertaining boxing show.

Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
I've noticed that a lot of the WSB guys are not being honest about their amatuer accomplishments. Its one thing if you inflate your amateur record, but guys are saying that they won national tournaments that they never won. Its really kinda goofy.
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Not a shocker, here is a story from insidethegames. biz
April 1 - IMG, the international sports and entertainment giant, have stated they are to withdraw from the World Series of Boxing (WSB) after a disappointing inaugural season that has so far failed to achieve the commercial success that was expected.
The International Boxing Association (AIBA) own 75 per cent of the competition which offers qualification for the London 2012 Olympics while IMG currently have a 25 per cent stake in it.
However, IMG are set to end their involvement in the event when the first season ends in May, despite AIBA insisting the second season will go ahead as planned.
In a joint statement issued by IMG and AIBA said: "IMG and WSB are pleased with the success of the inaugural season of the World Series of Boxing, which was launched last November after months of intensive cooperation between both organisations.
"Since the season started WSB and IMG have been in discussions on the respective roles of each organisation beyond the first season of the tournament.
"During these discussions it emerged that there were different expectations as to how the partnership should develop.
"The outcome of these discussions was a mutual decision for IMG to cease activities as the exclusive sales agent on sponsorship and TV distribution for the World Series of Boxing and, as a consequence, for IMG to transfer its shareholding in the World Series of Boxing back to AIBA, the International Boxing Association.
"These changes will take effect upon conclusion of the 2010-11 season."
Last month, the finals of the inaugural World Series of Boxing were moved from Macau to mainland China, the latest of a series of enforced changes to the series which have also included several changes of ownership of franchises.
AIBA said that staging the team and individual championships in Guiyang, the capital of the Guizhou province, rather than Macau, the original host, will "guarantee greater television coverage and public attention".
The WSB team finals will be held on the weekend of May 6 and 7 with the individual championships scheduled for May 27 and 28.
The five WSB individual champions will earn a place at the London 2012 Olympics and $20,000 (£12,000) in prize money.
The WSB regular season began in November and will conclude this month.

In defense of the WSB, what was IMG even doing for the leage. How do you invest money in a concept and then do nothing to promote it? This is especially strange when you consider that IMG is a promotional company? It makes me question the competence of IMG.

Question: If the WSB tanks, should Wu bury his head in the sand and resign?
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Boxing news in London reports that Pro-am cards are still going on.Jerome Thomas fought a professional bout during the recent Amateur French championships and world amateur champion Katie Taylor fought on the Ringondeaux/Casey professional card.
It also reported that five of the WSB 12 franchises have downsized into smaller venues.Four of these in the US and Mexico, the other in Paris. There seem to be problems with the WSB but pro-am cards will still go on

Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
There have been pro/am cards in the US for years. Amateurs box amateurs and pro fight pros, no big deal. It helps both groups out. Would Katie Taylor headlining an all amateur card draw as many people to see her fight as a pro/am card? I doubt it and I know she is vey popular in Ireland but being on the undercard of a Rigo-Casey main event, many more people would come to the show.mike222 wrote:Boxing news in London reports that Pro-am cards are still going on.Jerome Thomas fought a professional bout during the recent Amateur French championships and world amateur champion Katie Taylor fought on the Ringondeaux/Casey professional card.

Astana won the first leg of the final 3-2 against Paris.Second leg on May 7 when Paris bring out their big guns Nevin and Bouhenia.
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
As expected Paris proved too strong in the second leg winning 4-1 to take the title 6-4 on aggregate.

Boxing news in England reports that the two finalists in the 61KG category Wang Zhimin and Erzhan Musarifov have both withdrawn from the Olympics.Third placed frenchman Rachid Azzedine now qualifies for London 2012

Any idea why?Boxing news in England reports that the two finalists in the 61KG category Wang Zhimin and Erzhan Musarifov have both withdrawn from the Olympics.Third placed frenchman Rachid Azzedine now qualifies for London 2012
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Apparently Wang has a career ending injury and Musafirov because a) he lost in the team semis whilst Azzedine won for Paris in both the semis and finals b)Kazakhstan prefer other boxers at 60kg or c) something else.It will be interesting to see the Kazakh team for the worlds as I think b) is more likely. They have Gani Zhaylarov as their number one with Aidar Amirzakov as their number two.

Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
Besides a career ending injury which is understandable and I hope him well how do you withdrawal from an Olympics besides injury? We aren't talking a club show or a state final. It's the Olympics.
Re: WSB - World Series of Boxing
The individual WSB winner was guaranteed Olympic entry and this applies to all their weights.
Wang won at 61 but presumably as he cannot compete,he is replaced by Musarifov who lost in the final to Wang.
I do not know why Musarifov has withdrawn but he must have given reasons to the WSB.
On his withdrawal Azzedine who finished third has gains qualification
