whats tel marsh up to these days? interview him someone
the recent excellent honeyghan restrospective on these pages by geedorah got me thinking about another enigma from that era......tel marsh.
I was reading some old ko magazines i just bought from ebay from 1987 last night
while i was working out in the garage. I remember marsh as a kid in that huge year of 1987 when i watched itv boxing every saturday night and became hooked for life....anyway the magazines keep calling marsh a poor world champion and keep going on about some fighter called frankie warren who was begging for a shot from terry marsh and marsh wouldnt give it to him. They keep talking about frankie warren like he was the second coming and deserved a shot from marsh rather than hector camacho who was going to get the fight......of course marsh retired undefeated but no one calls him britains marciano or hagler a guy who walked out on top..........just how good was this guy? How would he compare to ricky hatton, shea neary, amir khan, or a junier witter? What exactly was behind his retirement.....epilepsy i heard.....
Please can some more knowledgable fans of the time (i was 10) offer opinions on marsh as a fighter at 140 lbs and how he would have done with some of the fighters i mentioned.

Terry Marsh, was very fit,had a good chin and good boxing style but wasn't the biggest puncher in the world,i really liked him,and he was a great character, when he won the title ( in a big top tent if i remember correctly ) is was one of those special nights on itv with big viewing figures,he was a household name and was lined up to fight comacho but suddenly retired with epilepsy.

Re: whats tel marsh up to these days? interview him someone
Terry Marsh has been involved in all sorts of things - If i remember, he was in politics for a while. Never lost in the ring - never lost a cpourt case either.

Terry Dooley did a cracking three parter on him for about a year or so ago.
On the political front he was trying to start a party called "none of the above" I think.

The best thing about Terry Marsh as a fighter apart from his physical conditioning was his mental toughness. he is possibly the strongest (mentally) boxer I have ever seen.bigjack wrote:Terry Marsh, was very fit,had a good chin and good boxing style but wasn't the biggest puncher in the world,i really liked him,and he was a great character, when he won the title ( in a big top tent if i remember correctly ) is was one of those special nights on itv with big viewing figures,he was a household name and was lined up to fight comacho but suddenly retired with epilepsy.

well obviously frankie warren didnt get a shot as marsh retired before he could take on his mandatory. but apparently the american mags were giving tel a hard time for beating a paper champ in joe manley and than fighting akio kameda instead of giving warren a shot.kevinmalpas wrote:did marsh ever give w@rren a shot?
those guys were oblivious to the fact it was customary in england for a champ to have a easy first defence before giving a mandatory like warren a shot.

This sums him up perfectly. He turned pro because he was shafted by the Olympic selectors in 1980 who wanted him to box-off for the welterweight slot with Joey Frost, a man Marsh had already beaten that year. Marsh would have won gold.McCannW14 wrote:The best thing about Terry Marsh as a fighter apart from his physical conditioning was his mental toughness. he is possibly the strongest (mentally) boxer I have ever seen.bigjack wrote:Terry Marsh, was very fit,had a good chin and good boxing style but wasn't the biggest puncher in the world,i really liked him,and he was a great character, when he won the title ( in a big top tent if i remember correctly ) is was one of those special nights on itv with big viewing figures,he was a household name and was lined up to fight comacho but suddenly retired with epilepsy.

I'm sure he's a chartered accountant or stockbroker. I spent a good few hours chatting to him at the Muhammad Ali gala dinner/dressage show at Windsor Castle. He also sent me an autographed copy of his book in the post (as well as a copy of a poster for his first world title fight). He is doing well for himself.

I've been looking for a copy of that book everywhere for a long time, any time I am on eBay I try a search for it. Dooley has a copy but I think he keeps it in the safe under the floorboards.
I've always had a special fascination with Marsh because my father was a fighter and a fireman like Marsh and the ould fella used to give it the full HBO 24/7 treatment in the lead up to his fights and they was compulsory viewing in our house.
In my hallway I have the robe he wore into the ring for his one and only world title defence.
It's professionally framed with paper padding inside the rope and pinned "and everything". Bought it on eBay along with a photographs of him wearing it into the ring, photos of him handing it over for an auction to raise funds for some Navy hostel on the south coast as well as an old article from a local newspaper about the auction and Terry. I would be embarrassed to say what I bought it for but it was about 10% of what it should have sold for and you wouldn't be able to buy a similar unembroidered robe from Primark for the price I paid, shocking really.
I've picked up a few Marsh bits of memorabilia since then and want to be a nice display to go along side the robe.

I'll text you his number. I believe he has quite a few copies of his book at home. Merely give him a call.

Quality! Lol.kevinmalpas wrote:did marsh ever give w@rren a shot?
On a more serious note, most folk believe it was Marsh who was responsible for allegedly being shot! However, this is NOT the case!
Remember, Allegedly said a long time ago "I know who shot me!" However, he has never disclosed such information. The fact he hasn't, should give you an indication as to who was responsible!
