I never did see this fight, but im sure it was on the undercard of a tv fight&was shown...
I may be confusing this fight with the Ayers-Dunne fight??

I read an interview with Jon Thaxton and he said he made the move up in weight to light welter as he felt he wasn't strong enough to compete with Billy Schwer and Colin Dunne (there was Michael Ayres as well at the weight); shows how strong the lightweights were back then.
Getting down to lightweight definitely affected his strength and stamina. I could tell the difference when sparring with him. He seemed stronger up at light-welter. I know it's only a few pounds, but at the lower weights it can make a real difference.

Sorry Teddy who did you spar with..Dunne or Thaxton?

Ayers was in a couple of top domestic dust ups,the Rigby fight was a cracker..
Sure was.
It genuinely makes me despair looking at the TV schedules these days, there were some tremendous fights back during that time. Seems every week on SKY had a good, quality match-up. Sure some of the SKY cards this year have produced decent entertaining fights but nothing really on a par with the ones mentioned in this thread.

That Ko win made Thaxton really..He could always bang as a young one in the Ams,shame his only Aba run was stopped by a more skilfull&experienced Georgie Smith...
Who was some fighter himself; and a very hard hitter (who knocked Paul Ryan out in the amateurs)
Smith wasnt really a banger in the Ams,he knocked Ryan out in the english semis as they was known then..Boxed Thaxton a couple of years after that(Thaxton was 18 i think)
i used to spar georgie smith as an amateur at canvey abc, his punches where very acurate and stung, his younger brother david was even better, they both could of been very good but they never had the 100% dedication it took to be the best.

Canvey had a some good boxers in the early 90s..I see his brother David box a few times(wasnt at his brothers standerd)
orbtastic wrote:He was a cabbie. Those were his words. I remember it clearly.
I can even remember what he was wearing.
he may of been a mini cab driver, if he was appologys, i was reffering to a london black cab driver, but his cousin still remains confident he was neither, but i will find out for sure tonight and post on here when i know, either way he was a good little fighter.
Yeah it's ok mate, written word and all that, it can be very literal.
I swear I can remember him being interviewed by SKY, before one of his fights up at 147, probably was the McCreesh fight and he's sitting there being quite self effacing in his flat cap, talking about banging out people cos they were taking the piss out of his chin etc. My memory is amazing, sometimes it lets me down and this is what, well over 10 years ago and I've not seen it since. Like I say, I've got it on tape, along with 10-15 of his other fights. He was fun to watch.
I thought Hale was a mortal lock to bang him out.
Here's the Hale & Thacko fights, haven't seen them in probably 15 years..brings back some good memories:

Lee Woolcock aba champion.darren humphreys,Andy Simms,Gary Cox&few more..
I saw that documentary about Dr Feelgood and Canvey Island looked a right rum place. Might go on that tour they do one day
I saw Georgie Smith box Derick Roach in Carlisle when he was passed his peak but he hung tough and showed he still could cut it. His stamina was done though. When he turned pro he bowled them over. He must have had a good, strong character to even get in with Ryan as an amateur as Paul was knocking them cold.
just to update anyone who was interested, paul ryan never took or passed the knowledge of london to become a black cab driver, however he did dable in minicab driving for a very short period of time in the chigwell/loughton area of essex. and aslo according to his uncle his still the minder of a rich arab in central london !
im hopefully going to get an interview with him, so if anyone wants to ask boxing or after boxing related questions feel free to let me know what i should ask him ?

paul told me he had sun bed shops ?? and was doing very well out of it
Can't say I liked him, came across as bit of a bully.
I remember him saying in an interview, possibly BN?, that if anyone cut him while driving, he would chase them and give them a good hiding. This was while he was fighting, too.
Obviously didnt give a sh!t that he was a professional fighter and that joe public, were exactly that.
