Coverage of Sergio Martinez in the UK

Post by Ben_London »

I'm stunned at the lack of coverage and reporting. The BBC Sport website dedicated 3 lines to it in their Cotto-Mayorga report (they didn't cover the Donaire-Montiel fight at all).

Nothing on Sky Sports website so far.

Just Premier Sports showed it.

Possibly the best fighter in the world currently is largely unknown in the UK, despite 3 excellent fights here a few years ago.

Just a shame he didn't get the chances until his mid 30's. His conditioning at Middleweight is fantastic - always looked in good shape, but since moving up just looks absolutely incredible.

Not surprised at all little mention over here, you've got to really GO some as a boxer to get the UK media to notice.

Sure, the Argie is looking fantastic, but he just doesn't have that X factor, does he ?
Even with his last two stunning wins, you're not thinking Marvin Hagler as you watch him.
To the main steam, he's just ANOTHER of boxing's so called "world champs".

Watching it on Sat night, was really surprised how absolutely massive at 160 he looks. Built like a mini Mike Tyson, hard to believe he made LM for so long. He must be P4P top 5 these days. Watch out Carl Froch.

He seems to have put on a good 8 lbs since the move up in weight, from 162 lbs to 170 lbs (fight night weights).

I think it's slightly deceiving though, 'cos he's only about five-nine (well, he was years ago when a mate of mine met him in Bristol) & we're so used to seeing "middleweights" these days towering over six foot (Taylor, Williams, Pavlik etc etc) that when you see someone of a "proper" middleweight height he looks kinda squashed. I don't think he's that much bigger-looking than say Benn or Eubank or Watson, to my mind.

But yeah, he's definitely looking more solid. I think everyone does throughout their 30s, though. Unless you're Daniel Zaragoza.

Zaragoza had an extra 7lbs of scartissue on his face, which made up for the lack of weightgain over the rest of his frame :TU:

i wouldn't exactly agree. it's more that he doesn't get great ratings over there. you have to be a ginger irish looking mexican or a mexican plodder, or else a spoiling american olympian or jeff lacy the 2nd, to get known in the middle divisions over there.

I'd say he does have that X-Factor an exciting southpaw style, speed , knock out power and movie star looks. He fights out of Spain doesn't he I wonder how popular he is there? must be big in his home country too.

He has far more crossover appeal than Floyd Mayweather imo who can render a fight boring at times with his unwillingness to take chances.

good point. he just needs that glamour fight, vs someone like cotto, angulo, somebody like that who will make ppl tune in to see martinez batter them.

even mayweather wasn't popular until he beat gatti and judah.

that said, i think it's mandatory for the best middleweight champs to go underrated and hungry (hopkins, hagler), craving that money fight.

regardless, if HBO keep making these terrific matchups and martinez keeps delivering, i'll be happy. already he's joined the elite company of recent light middle champs, even surpassed some of them, by going up and getting the middleweight glory (something winky failed at).

Completely agree with the HBO stance Dzinziruk was a worthy fight and a Cotto/ Martinez would do the trick for me next, it wouldn't take that fight long to heat up but I'm sure Cotto would come off worse. Pirog would be a war but it wouldn't put him in the limelight

My favourite Mayweather fight is Corrales which speaks volumes about the excitement his dominance brings to the sport for me. He seems to love a good UD rather than a KO. He could have hunted down Mosley and done a real job but ...anyway just having a moan.

It doesn't help that he gave up all his world titles. Might work OK for a Pacquiao or Mayweather, but Martinez is not bigger than the titles and a fight against a Ukrainian at Foxwoods is not going to get much attention.

sure but he wanted the TV date and only dzinziruk - a owrthy foe - was approved. WBC were very keen to get chavez jr and alvarez into title bouts - it seems they would have gone to any length.

shame that we'll get all these youth/2nd division champions, though.

he did say he wanted to have full WBC status again, and go after the chavez jr-zbik winner. perhaps he'll do a hopkins-joppy, who had half of the WBA title, at one point.

much prefer him fighting a world champ (dzin) than a pretender (zbik).

shame on HBO, who are apparently going to show the chavez jr v zbik bout, weird considering they've been showing martinez's bouts and then to support the bogus bouts that are allowed to exist due to the WBC nonsense.

No the reason why he hasnt got a big fan base at the minute is because he's from argentina. If you look at the guys with big fan bases like pacquaio or alvarez in mexico they have a big contigent following them in the states aswell at home. Also another thing that sets martinez apart from say pacquaio or mayweather over here at least is he hasnt fought ricky hatton like those two have and thus been given the same big exposure.

Martinez is a top fighter and his ko of williams gave him the x factor - he is the usain bolt of boxing - the americans want to ignore him cause he is so good, and thus the uk also ignore.
