Re: Matthew Ellis the first billion dollar sportsman
I heard he was a very talented fighter in the amateurs and tipped for big things but he obviously has some sort of Audley harrison syndrome unfortunately
Re: Matthew Ellis the first billion dollar sportsman
When Askin beat him Askin was saying how Ellis was his hero growing up round the Blackpool are or words to that effect, I assume Ellis had some staus in Blackpool in his early fight career

He was a good Amateur, just seemed to have lost his bottle as a pro...wrimc wrote:I heard he was a very talented fighter in the amateurs and tipped for big things but he obviously has some sort of Audley harrison syndrome unfortunately
Re: Matthew Ellis the first billion dollar sportsman
I remember him coming through in the pros, never seemed particularly "big" or a huge puncher then got bust up by that Yuri Yelistratov or whatever his name was, around the same time a few other British boxers got their bubbles burst by imports (I'm thinking Catley & Matthews etc) that they were expected to beat easily, and the wheels came off.
Re: Matthew Ellis the first billion dollar sportsman
there is a big white collar circuit in blackpool i dont know if he is plying his trade there now could probably earn a few bob doing that
Re: Matthew Ellis the first billion dollar sportsman
where did his punch go????mercman wrote:Ellis was a really good amateur and showed promise in his early professional fights too - he was fast, mobile and could punch. In my view he was never really big enough to make it as a top class heavyweight though. Although he was bulked up to about 230lbs at one stage, he would probably have been better at cruiserweight. Either way, Ellis' recent performances have been very poor indeed. Clearly, he lost his way at some point. Not heard anything about him for a while. Has he packed it in now?

Against Fury, he threw ZERO punches. He made Audley look like Katsidis in that fight.

Re: Matthew Ellis the first billion dollar sportsman
Now you are being nasty, he was a ABA champion and fought for his country against the yanks - have you done anything similar? He was a good fighter who today would have made a decent 200lbs cruiserweight but when he was fighting and in his prime he would have had a job making 190lbs so he bulked up a little and fought at heavyweight with some success, he was pencilled in to fight Danny Williams for the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles and I remember at the time thinking if he could land with his big left he could have won that fight - he wasn't so useless thats for sure. And if you want to have a go at someone - his name is John Hyland - I don't think Matthew Ellis appreciated the ballyhoo at the time either and I don't know why he should be saddled with it.IronLiver wrote:Jeff Thomas wrote:Super talented. Against Fury I recall he actually put his head in the way of the punches on purpose (or so it seemed) looking for the excuse to end it.
It takes real balls to get in the ring as a pro, so can`t knock him there, but he was certainly a long way from what was predicted of him.

Re: Matthew Ellis the first billion dollar sportsman
I'm sure Woods reached over a billion dollars, however with his divorce settlement pending .......
Re: Matthew Ellis the first billion dollar sportsman
Nice guy was Matt, I had good chat with him after boxing him and he was a top fella, told me he chased the women played the game and just burnt the candle at both ends, he has a few kids one down here an one somewhere else, he liked Liverpool but there is just so many distractions in this great great city.. This is why such a tiny town produces great amateurs in the dozens but not as many pro's but I feel that's changing a little now.. I think had Ellis had got down to the 13st 8 limit in the old days he could have definitely won domestic titles at least IMO...
Re: Matthew Ellis the first billion dollar sportsman
P.s woods has not reached a billion yet, also he won't for few years after his divorce settlement.. :(
Re: Matthew Ellis the first billion dollar sportsman

Well Schumacher was on £53 million a year in wages, add on his sponsorship etc on top, he's got to be in the high hundreds of millions.
As of now Tiger Woods has won $113,602,123 in prize money for tournements. so thats from 1996 to 2010. Not as much as i would of guessed. the rest of his huge earnings are from sponsorship deals.

Yeah Nike made him. They didn't produce golfing equipment when Woods was amateur but when he went pro they saw it as the oppurtunity to get in on the Golfing gameBomber 1 wrote:He got 600 million off Nike for a decade too, I think his earnings ate close but when the tax man hits him mate it's something else, this guy is probably gonna be the first billion dollar sportsman..
