Lonsdale Belt rules

Post by barry »

I'm not certain how it works, but will the winner of the Nicky Cook-vs-Dazzo Williams, since it is for all three of the main British/Euro titles, win the Lonsdale belt outright?

No that is not correct.

The fighter has got to make 3 British (Lonsdale) title defences before obaining the belt outright. Nicky Cook will not do that as he has never been British champion.

Dazzo Williams has already got a lonsdale belt to keep (as he has achieved the defences).

If Cook wins, he won't have it for keeps but will have to make 3 defences to do it.

I don't think it is 3 defences per se, but victory in 4 British title fights - so you could be champion on 4 seperate occasion and failing in your first defence each time and still get the belt for keeps.

Hope that helps.

O-Kay, so you just have to defend the British title and not win the British, Commonwealth and EBU all together. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

To win the Lonsdale belt outright you need to win 4 British Title fights 2 of which need to be mandatory defences.

I didn't know that. Seems fair although would be unfortunate for a boxer who wins the title 4 times (none as a mandatory challenger).

Actually, are your sure of that ruling. I mean, Barnes has got a lonsdale belt but only fought 1 (and not sure if he was) mandatory challenger.

I know the ruling was only changed recently the reason I know is only due to the fact Scott Dann is aiming to win the belt outright. I know the Board do make exceptions they gave Witter the belt for keeps as there were no worthy challengers for a ages. Not sure about Barnes.
