I've noticed the numbers fluctuating quite a bit. Particularly for fighters from the era of much higher ratings. You can look at a Sugar Ray Robinson fight or an Archie Moore fight, and then look back at it a week or two later, and the guys' numbers will be a couple hundred different from where they'd been. It always seemed strange to me, for numbers from the past to still be changing. I figured maybe it's because of new fights being put in the database, but I don't know.

... I compared the pre-bout and after-bout ratings both version - from Feb 25 and from Mar 8

- the ratings mostly drift by small values - this comes from new antries or corrections for distant bouts
- distance of time (earlier bouts of his opponents)
- distance of directness of comparision (bouts of opponents of opponents of opponents ...)

But I quickly found the first massive correction

1949-07-11 Robinson UD 15 Gavilan
- this bout was changed on 2011-03-03
- the scores were entered - 9-6, 9-6, 12-3 - and the result now is a much closer one
- so Robinson before had a after-bout rating of 3,742 points and now he has 3,585 points
- the pre-bout rating was 2,771 before the correction and 2.772 after the correction

So even historical bouts may change massively by massive corrections.

Well, maybe most of those larger changes actually pertained to numbers I hadn't looked at since before the January change.
But since you bring up between-bout changes, I remember that I wondered what happened to Bernard Hopkins between Hakkar and Joppy and then between Jones II and Pascal I?

Hi Martin,

I know how you're interested in using the probability as an indication of your rating success. You I know I don't like it, as it increases the ratings of bottom feeders and produces other unpredictable results. Anyhow I was thinking that may be a better statistic than overall predictability across all fights, would be the predictability for fights of 10 rounds or more. Generally these fights are for something, a regional title, or a belt. These are fights that fighters generally earned their right to fight in, where both fighters are motivated to win, and may be a better metric for judging the algorithm.

NOT that I'm indicating to use that as your SOLE criteria. But if you are going to use it as a criteria at all, then I think it might be more reliable.

In addition to this, I'd also suggest eliminating fights that include undefeated fighters as they are (likely) still on the ascent.

currently I optimize with boxers only, who

- are connected to at least 4 different opponents within 8 years
- connected means to have close results, neither lost nor won by ko/tko or clear decision on points

I have to go into this ...

I tested the rating tracking and every thing is ok.

The small difference came from the a time lag.

Historic bout ratings are updated only on every current day with the same end fugure as the bout year.

As there are small drifts in the ratings, caused by far (distance in time and opponent) additions and corrections, these discrepencies may occur between bouts over a year's change.

Got one for you Martin.

Found an instance where both boxers gained points as a result of a match. No inactivity or quality performance deduction (I dont think) involved either.

Kondo 177 -> 179
Kato 119 -> 121

Kondo: -2 points for SD, but 4 additional points from launch process = +2 points
Kato: +2 points for SD

Maybe Boxrec should have a tool (for the editors) that highlights blatan errors. For instance, there's no way Bert Ikin W 4 (KO 1) - L 15 (KO 8) - D 0 weighed in at 1957¾ lbs.

Same issue with Arthur Pearson W 3 (KO 2) - L 3 (KO 0) - D 1, and so on...

I did some data validation w/ scorecards before, but the editors didn't seem too interesting in resolving them. I offered to do some clean-up work but JohnShep declined -- guess I'm not trustworthy enough. I don't really have the time these days anyhow.
