Where does Brian Magee go from here?
Where does Brian Magee go from here?
After Magee's predictable loss to Bute in Canada last weekend. Where you think think that Big Brian goes from here?
He mentioned after the fight, the fact that he turned down a WBA title shot and he hopes that it is still there for him to pick it up.
What should Brian do, get back in to the ring quickly to fight a bum and get back to winning ways, or should he fight another top 10 fighter.
Or should Brian, at long last, consider retirement.

Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
Gotta be the DeGale v Groves winner hasn't it? Not sure what the situation will be with the WBA after the loss but I reckon it'll be much harder to get the Sartison shot now. Beating Sartison for a phoney WBA belt should not be what he is aiming for, the winner of DeGale v Groves will be BIG news and Magee would be a great fight for the winner and he should have a decent shot at getting the win.
Unfortunately in the grand scheme of things the current SMW division is just too good for Magee to rise near the top of it, but he certainly did no harm in his showing against Bute. Gauging the reaction on forums it seems many would like to see him again.

Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
Now that he's been in with Bute people will want to see prospects thrown in with Magee to see how well they do in comparison.
Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
Anyone think the commentators for the Bute vs Magee fight were absolutely cack ?
"Magee has a chin, only Carl Froch has put him down.."
Didn't they remember Magee getting floored something like 4 times by Robin Reid when he lost the IBO title ?
To think these boys get a fat wedge for their role, Id be mortified if i wasn't absolutely spot on with my facts about an opponent.

Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
Degale v Magee would appeal. If Magee is planning to continue he needs big fights.
Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
Well, it was a brave performance and one of those that might have done him more good than harm.
I can see some champions thinking "well there is the man who lost an aging fight vs Bute - I can look good vs him" and he could get something.
Would love to see him vs Sartison, or maybe up at Light Heavy if something happens to Brahmer.

Good summary. Cleverly v Magee wouldn't suprise me if Nathan comes through against that right Braehmer.stujones wrote:Well, it was a brave performance and one of those that might have done him more good than harm.

Sartison is fighting Stieglitz next for the WBO title, he has dropped the WBA title, or so I've heard.stujones wrote:Would love to see him vs Sartison
Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
Well, probably Magee might be out of the WBA rankings (what a mistaka demaka) for fighting for the IBF title..... its normally the case, I guess he will have to see next month. Maybe the Groves/Degale winner vs Magee for the vacant title if Magee is fortunate enough to have his world ranking in tacked.Crease wrote:Sartison is fighting Stieglitz next for the WBO title, he has dropped the WBA title, or so I've heard.stujones wrote:Would love to see him vs Sartison
Isn't it odd, we always seem to think a certain promoters fighters will always have to fight a brit for a World title. Evidence does suggest this is FAR from always the case - but I just guess its the stereotype.

Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
I said on this site before that Magge was making a huge mistake choosing to fight Bute, instead of taking the mandatory fight against Sartison for the WBA title.stujones wrote:Well, probably Magee might be out of the WBA rankings (what a mistaka demaka) for fighting for the IBF title
And when I said this, I was condemned...
PS. McCloskey is making a mistake as well.

Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
I thunk he should try and stay at fringe world level to try and get another shot, I think if he goes down and fights DeGale/Groves winner then I don't see him fighting at Championship level again! Maybe he could go after someone like Andrade or Brinkley or even Mendy.

did he have to vacate his euro title for his world title shot ?
Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
Macgee fought bravely and did well in places. I agree the commentators were idiots.....they didnt give mcgee rounds he won early on.....plus comparing the limited bute to roy jones jnr lol lmfao......bute is another swen ottke a very good talented boxer with strong support in his fortress.....but would he have beaten a sumbu kalambay or mike mccallum, a michale nunn or james toney, a nigel benn or iran barkley?

Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
Would he buggery. He looks pretty good against the guys he has fought but his fans so often seem to be trying to convince themselves. Obviously I'm a Froch fan and I'v had Bute fans tell me they think Andrade and Berrio would beat Jermaine Taylor and that Arthur Abraham has no pedigree because his only wins at Super-middle are Taylor and the last guy he beat.mugabi wrote:Macgee fought bravely and did well in places. Bute deserves to be mixing it with the Wards, Kesslers, Frochs, Abrahams etc etc etc but for whatever reason it hasn't happened yet. The Super 6 argument is void in my opinion because before it even happened big fights were happening and people have now dropped out who with the greatest respect to Magee are better than him.
Super middleweight is so stacked it is untrue, we have what? about 7 or 8 names at the weight now and I don't think there's a single guy out of the lot of them who would beat every one of the others (did that make sense?) The division is so deep. I don't blame Bute in all of this, thats the thing, his handlers need shooting seriously, he was with showtime before I think, then they moved to HBO and were saying 'now the big fights are gonna happen' and it just ended up being the same old 'warm up fight to the big one followed by a mandatory defence and repeat' cycle. Now they are back with showtime again lets hope it doesn't continue.
Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
Do u really think butes handlers need "shooting" james?
Somehow bute seems to have progressed to being seen as the no1 sm by boxrec, the ring, and lef to the stacked superstar laden super six to being deigrated in some quarters.....alll cos bute isnt in it......thats a pretty neat trick to pull on butes handlers part.......and bute is pulling ion huge crowds in canada where he is primed for less risky better paid fights with pascal, kessler and perhaps martinez or pavlik.....and its all being done on his terms....his schedule...........and not the back breaking super 6 where my man froch has had to fight and in my eyes beat abraham, kessler, dirrel, and taylor............at such a breakneck schedule of hard fight aftwer hard fight.......
In my mind the super 6 has been a great success if we can have a hasty and tinely climax......
Bute usnt really much more than a poor mans white michael nunn in my opinion and i see carl beating him and destroying the myth of bute

Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
Bute is proof that there's something up with boxrecs rankings tho. The fact he hasn't beat anyone in boxrecs top10 says it all. Boxrecs ratings clearly hold his undefeated record in too high a light. I'll also bet that by the time the Super 6 is concluded ring magazine won't have him rated number 1 as well, it amazes me that they have him there considering again he hasn't touched anyone in the top 5 or 6 with a barge pole while the rest of the top5 or 6 are all fighting each other.mugabi wrote:Do u really think butes handlers need "shooting" james?

No I don't literally mean we should shoot his handlers, but I didn't like it when a mate of ours made a lot of money from lining up bums for our top boxers to fight. Boxers who went on to fight Floyd and Bernard later on. So as a fan it's a good job I don't have much hair left because I'd be tearing it out with the way Bute has been/is being handled.
His fans keep believing the crap they write in the media about him too, about the fights not happening because the opponents turn down the offers, and yet Sartison and Stieglitz have apparently agreed to fight each other fairly happily.
Yeah you make a good point that his handlers have made a lot of money out of him. But I think the true boxing fan sees through it. In my opinion respect is king rather than money in this game. If David Haye retires without fighting a Klitschko he will be a rich man but will he really have the respect of the boxing World despite his cruiserweight exploits? Possibly not. Same analogy here. If Bute goes on like this (and his next fight will be Jean Paul Mendy, just watch it happen) then his respect just goes down and down.

Yes, Magee is not the European Champion anymore...damianhucker1 wrote:did he have to vacate his euro title for his world title shot ?
Just as McCloskey will have to relinquish hsi European title to fight Kahn.
Re: Where does Brian Magee go from here?
Hi Crease - I agreed with your comments regarding Sartison - if the fight would have got made. At 35, he was drinking in the last chance saloon and I don't know if Sartison would have fancied it. Risk vs Reward. Credit to him fighting Steiglitz, but I imagine the reward would be so much higher fighting a popular German fighter. Sartison has balls no doubt - Kessler in Denmark, and now losing his WBA belt for a WBO one - but because he is such a no name - even with the WBA belt he had nothing to lose.Crease wrote:Yes, Magee is not the European Champion anymore...damianhucker1 wrote:did he have to vacate his euro title for his world title shot ?

So maybe he just had to take the chance and the exposure help him - almost like a Matt Hatton situation.
McCloskey is in much the same boat, what is he 30. Not really known outside the boxing fraternity and Ireland.
