New England Golden Gloves...

Post by Weston »

So far the tournament has been fun, but I have not seen a star. Last year 2 National Champions came from the New England Region. I haven't seen that top quality this year. For what it is worth the big nights are this coming Tuesday and Wednesday so I am still hoping (I have season tickets, but at the start I just see the central region and then the winners from the other 3 regions come for the semi-final and finals.

Any news on stars from other Golden Gloves tournaments?

(For what it is worth I understand Ronald Ellis, who was excellent in the N.E. Golden Gloves last year and went on to win the Nationals, had his first pro fight recently and knocked his opponent out in about 8 seconds).

Sorry John, I had pretty much given up on the thread and just saw your reply today. I am from Cambridge, MA. I'm just back to boxing after years away and can't get enough. We have 4 season tickets, led by my uncle who has been going for over 40 years. We hit Hookslide Kelley's before the fights (not every night) and always stop at Hynes Tavern (next to the connector) on the way home. We often met a few others at Hynes as it is a good spot for those heading back toward Boston.

And you are right about the building. It is tremendous!

I read up on Toka Kahn-Clary (132) ...he's 71-6 as an amateur as of a few months ago and he's only 18...

That's a lotta fights and he says he's only been boxing for 3 years... :oo

@ 123 isnt Tremaine SOLIS...his name is Tremaine WILLIAMS, he's from New Haven, CT...when I was an amateur I fought in the same tournament every year on the way to the nationals...throughout the years we have NUMEROUS future olympics contenders, world champions and pro contenders and known boxers come through that Lowell Auditorium such as Marciano, Hagler, Tyson, Starling, Micky Ward, Peter McNeeley, Jose Antonio Rivera, Mike-Mike Oliver, Joey DeGrandis, Rodney Toney, Joey Gamache, Ray Olivera, Vinny Pazienza, Lawrence Clay-Bey, etc etc etc...

Oppps, it was a typo, and it is fixed.

I saw the fight, like Williams, and hope he makes some noise.

Yes and I believe he is the front runner for the Olympic team, especially now that Roman Morales has turned pro. Nonetheless, he should win his match tonight and become the Golden Gloves Champion.

Midget is my favorite amateur to watch. Great boxer. People will know his name soon enough all over.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this thread had some life. I visit BoxRec regularly, but I do not always look at the amateur board (which is a mistake I will correct).

I was happy to see Tramaine Williams become National Golden Gloves Champion. I liked the kid when I saw him. It is also good to hear he is a front runner for the olympic team. I was looking for Toka Kahn Clary, but didn't see any results for him (either I missed it, he lost very early, or he did not participate).

Back to Williams, I only got to see him twice. However, he really did stand out.

One last comment, I see from the original post, that I was talking about bars and then driving to Boston. For what it is worth we do have a regular attendee, who does not drink and serves as our designated driver (Thank God).

Ok, just a little research, shows that Toka Kahn-Clary won one fight then lost in the next round to the Detroit champion, Erick DeLeon. The DeLeon went on to win the 132 division.
