A Roberto Duran biography...How would it be???
I imagine someone writing a biography about Duran. I imagine how great would have been. Duran does not have an autobiography. Anybody knows why???
I ask this forum, which fighter on DVD or VHS would have the best career highlights???
1. Muhammad Ali???
2. Roberto Duran???
3. Sugar Ray Robinson???
4. Joe Louis???or
5. Sugar Ray Leonard???

I think it would be the fighter that fought the most exciting fights and wasnt a boring fighter. I personally would say surgar ray robinson or roberto duran because both were involved a lot of tough amazing fights and leonard didnt have enough fights to wanna see him over those two. ali fights in the 60s were ali dominating the whole fight but theyt were good and after the FIGHT OF THE CENTURY he got old and fought a lot of lackluster 15 decisions. joe louis was great but a lot of his fights went barely5 rounds because he was so dominant. he hardly ever went the distance and he never had a memorable fight besides schmelling II which was the biggest beating of all time.
now roberto duran fought a lot of great classics like the dejesus trilogy and both leonard fights not to mention his 15 rounder with hagler and how bout his great last hurrah against iran barkley. he also had some other decent fights like davey moore, wildred benitez, vinny pazienza, adolph virtuet, and ken buchanan.
robinson fought many wars and a lot of great fights. he has so many good ones it would be hard to see all the highlights of them. in his prime, he fought great battled with lamotta, bell, gavilan, turpin II, then when he came back a bit aged he had great fights with fullmer, basilio, joey mxim. he has so many highlights to see. i love his knockout over gene fullmer. what a left hook.
those two are the guys i wanna see.

Any Duran Biography would be forced to deal with the controversial question:
Were Boxing Legend Roberto Duran and All time great Country Singer Merle Haggard Separated at birth? Indeed, this may account for the apparent procrastination.

Henry Armstrong. If you could get the right music, a Hurricane Hank compilation would be awesome.elmersalsa wrote:I ask this forum, which fighter on DVD or VHS would have the best career highlights???
When I say Armstrong used to march forward non-stop, I really do mean non-stop. He was always doing something, and I mean that - not like when someone says Marciano or Chavez were always throwing punches... Because let's face it, they took a lot of time to feint and move about too. Armstrong didn't. He was right on a guy from the first bell to the last. You could make a great highlight video of him with the right footage.
I have five fights of him. Arizmendi IV, Arizmendi V, Garcia I, Ambers II and Ross.BoxBuzz wrote:How much footage even exists of Armstrong? Can't be that plentiful.
I'm pretty sure there's another five or six fights available. Armstrong was hugely entertaining, people loved to watch him, so they filmed quite a few of his fights considering his weight and the era. Today he'd be the highest selling fighter of all time I would imagine. Back then he wasn't the only exciting fighter though. You had Louis, Montgomery, Jack, Williams, Saddler, Pep, Robinson, Gavilan, Graziano, Zale, LaMotta, all from around about the same era, so Armstrong didn't seem quite as entertaining when practically every other top fighter was a knockout artist, marvelous technician or action specialist.

actually the 5th fight was a welterweight title fight. i always thought the 4th was a featherweight or lightweight fight
Actually yes, you're right. Armstrong was still under the lightweight limit though. He was crazy. Not so much in the fifth Arizmendi fight, as the latter weighed only a pound or two more, but sometimes Armstrong was defending or fighting for a title weighing significantly less than his opponent. Garcia weighed a full twelve and a half pounds more than Armstrong. Ross weighed nine pounds more. Manfredo weighed eleven pounds more.BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:DoubleM wrote:Some of the early ones were, but the ones I have, the fourth and fifth fights, were held at lightweight.BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:isnt the arizmendi IV fight a featherweight fight? or ..........

Duran's early life would make a brilliant film/book. Panama is also a very interesting place so it would also be goodto elarn about the country during Duran's childhood.
Roberto was a great boxer who also had a number of personal weaknesses and was often outspoken. This would make for a great story.

I don't disagree that Duran and Robinson were in many great fights, but I also think ALI was the most exciting heavyweight champion ever, along with his other gifts... for exciting fights you have him vs Liston 1, Chuvalo 1 and 2, Frazier 1, 2 and 3, Norton 1, 2 and 3, Foreman, SHavers, and Spinks 1 and 2.... thats some line up really. Ali made even ordinary fights exciting with his chrisma and talents....

He met his dad FOR THE FIRST TIME when he was scheduled to fight on a card in Los Angeles, CA in 1974. I do not know about the outcome of their relationship after that meeting, BUT DURAN NEVER PUBLICLY SPOKE BAD OF HIS DAD, that I know of. I could be corrected.ferocity wrote:Would be great to have a book about Duran. One thing I would like to know is did he ever get to meet his dad? If so were they close or if he knew who his dad was?
Wasn't his father a boxer too?.... what was his name?.....elmersalsa wrote:He met his dad FOR THE FIRST TIME when he was scheduled to fight on a card in Los Angeles, CA in 1974. His dad was a US Marine stationed at the Panama Canal in the early 1950s. I do not know if he was also a boxer, but Duran's older brother Toti was an amateur fighter.silkov wrote:Wasn't his father a boxer too?.... what was his name?.....elmersalsa wrote:He met his dad FOR THE FIRST TIME when he was scheduled to fight on a card in Los Angeles, CA in 1974. I disagree. I find most of those fights boring to watch. Hell, the only one I like is the first Frazier one, and that's only because of the electricty and energy Frazier brought to the ring. I don't enjoy watching Muhammad Ali fight.silkov wrote:I don't disagree that Duran and Robinson were in many great fights, but I also think ALI was the most exciting heavyweight champion ever, along with his other gifts... for exciting fights you have him vs Liston 1, Chuvalo 1 and 2, Frazier 1, 2 and 3, Norton 1, 2 and 3, Foreman, SHavers, and Spinks 1 and 2.... thats some line up really. Henry Armstrong... Now that was one exciting fighter, and in my opinion the greatest of all time.
What about the first Louis - Conn fight? From what I have seen that was a good fight and showed Louis come from behind to win the fight, always the mark of a great fighter.BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:joe louis was great but a lot of his fights went barely5 rounds because he was so dominant. he hardly ever went the distance and he never had a memorable fight besides schmelling II which was the biggest beating of all time..
