Re: whatever happened to noel quarless ?
Noel had a gym above the Stuart pub in Walton. He trained a few kids in there to keep them off the streets. He had loads equipment in there and he charged buttons to use it. The pub got took over by new management and that was the end of it. Always wondered where he went but chris has answered that for me.
Re: whatever happened to noel quarless ?
Noel is a good guy, I've known him my whole life, he's a good coach and was a good fighter, he tells me funso broke his jaw when they boxed each other, from that day onwards he fought with a proper gumshield instead of a £1 one ;)

I have always used cheap gumshield, I find they are bigger and help absorb shots betterBomber 1 wrote:Noel is a good guy, I've known him my whole life, he's a good coach and was a good fighter, he tells me funso broke his jaw when they boxed each other, from that day onwards he fought with a proper gumshield instead of a £1 one ;)

Re: whatever happened to noel quarless ?
At times you see fighters with loose gumshields and ive seen the same kinda fighters getting knocked out,Ive always wondered how they've escaped not having it knocked down their throats and choking to death?!Coco wrote:I have always used cheap gumshield, I find they are bigger and help absorb shots betterBomber 1 wrote:Noel is a good guy, I've known him my whole life, he's a good coach and was a good fighter, he tells me funso broke his jaw when they boxed each other, from that day onwards he fought with a proper gumshield instead of a £1 one ;)

Noel beat Tate, thourally outboxed him, crazy with the Ashley thing and funso, he's unreal that lad, moves are special they really are, his choreography skills are unique too as people see what that his group does things non of the others can...
Re: whatever happened to noel quarless ?
ashley is the man :!: comes across really genuine & a complete gentleman on that judging panel show :!:

Re: whatever happened to noel quarless ?
I recall Noel's fight with Tate as a joke, a dangerous joke. Tate was overweight and past his best should really have been sent home. He died not too long afterwards from a brain tumour. Noel was a talented figher in the mood but you could never guarantee that mood. Funso broke his jaw but nobody saw the punch and it was all over before it had barely begun with Noel turning away in obvious pain and distress.

Re: whatever happened to noel quarless ?
Noel was going nowhere as pro, until they brought him in as an easy fight for future European champ and prospect Anders Eklund - Noel absolutely polaxed the big Swede in a shocker. Then he was thrown in with the former world rated John L Gardner, and again he pulled off a massive upset - that was how he made his name: back to back sensational upset KO wins.
But that proved to be his brief moment in the sun, as he never reached those heights again.
Pretty sure the above poster is not the real Funso Banjo, who was around the same time as Frank, but never came close to getting a fight with him. I remember one of Funso's fight with Highroy Currie, for the Brit title, was one of the worst ever seen. Harry Mullan of BN described it as watching 12 rounds between two barely moving statues.

Re: whatever happened to noel quarless ?
i saw his fight against lennox lewis. first punch lewis threw and the referee jumped in to wave it off. noel was in absolutely no trouble as far as i can remember.mercman wrote:There was a brief period in the early 1980s when Quarless was hyped as a real heavyweight prospect. After he stopped Gardner ITV though they had a potential rival to Frank Bruno who, at that time, was knocking them out on the BBC. A couple of televised losses against American journeyman Mark Lee quickly ended any such idea and Quarless slipped out of the limelight almost as quickly as he had grabbed the headlines in the first place. 15 minutes of fame and all that.MightyWarrior wrote:Noel was going nowhere as pro, until they brought him in as an easy fight for future European champ and prospect Anders Eklund - Noel absolutely polaxed the big Swede in a shocker. He was flattened twice by Lewis, but made a show of being angry when he jumped up after the ref had waved it over.merseybox wrote: i saw his fight against lennox lewis. first punch lewis threw and the referee jumped in to wave it off. noel was in absolutely no trouble as far as i can remember.

you've a better memory than me MW! i think i picture him going down but not from anything massively concussive (?) - anyway - he races pigeons now i believe.MightyWarrior wrote:He was flattened twice by Lewis, but made a show of being angry when he jumped up after the ref had waved it over.merseybox wrote: i saw his fight against lennox lewis. first punch lewis threw and the referee jumped in to wave it off. noel was in absolutely no trouble as far as i can remember.
