2011 National Silver Gloves

Post by aliski »

Hello to all, maybe someone can give me an answer. This was my first visit to the Nationals and from what I saw, Politics play a big roll. I really thought that I wouldn't see any corruption with-in the National level, (guess I was wrong). As a first timer, it really was a let down to see how they can do that to the KIDS. If anyone happened to see the 6th bout in the finals 12-13yrs 65lbs Alejandro Leon R3 vs Rasheen Brown R2. I would like your input. as far as I'm concernd, Alejandro Leon R3 was the WINNER!!!! but was ROBBED.....

alex is a very good friend of mine as a spectator i saw the same thing he won hands down. he landed not only the better punches but the most punches. the other kid just ran most of the bout its a shame this happened to him but it will happen to all of us. this is amateur boxing and mistake will happen im just glad alex (ali) acted with the most respect to the judges and sportsmanship to his opponent...

Ali showed great sportsmanship after the loss. I also thought that he won, but sometimes they get it wrong, unfortunately.

That is something that I try to instill in him, no matter the outcome always show good sportmanship.
Because at the end of the day, it not only reflex on him, but the Coaches. I appreciate your input, and be certain that next year we will be bringing it HOME. It was a good experience for us both, he only has been boxing for 10mnths. With that said, you best believe he will be a-lot sharper next year. Good looking...

He's a good fighter and I loved his charisma, but he needs to define his identity better. He tries to be a slick boxer/counter-puncher, but then he tries to come forward and bang. He comes forward with his hands still in a counter-punching position sometimes, and he has trouble making the transition in mid-exchange. Also, he gets really squared up. As a result of these two problems, he gets hit much more than he should. He would do much better to pick one style or the other and work on it--by trying to switch between the two he made his fights much harder than they needed to be.

Allow me to clarify something--I think he could use both styles effectively, depending on the scenario--of course there is a time and place for everything. What he really needs to work on is deciding when to box and when to bang, and, again, to make the transition better. Until he can figure out how to make the transition from one to the other on the fly, however, he needs to just pick one and work on it.

That being said, the fact that I remember him clearly out of several hundred boxers at the tournament says something very positive. I think he has plenty to offer, and, again, he has a great charisma about him that helps make him memorable, he just needs to iron a few things out and tighten up his style. Mainly keeping his hands in the right position depending on which style he wants to use, not dropping them after he punches, not throwing wild punches, and not squaring his feet and shoulders up.

He is certainly a fighter I want to keep my eye on. How long has he been boxing, and how many fights does he have/how many has he won? I know he's won plenty of tournaments, just wanting some more definite info.
