Salvador Sanchez vs. Alexis Arguello

Post by Grimm »

Who would win this one and why?

This would be a very interesting matchup of 2 great fighters.

By 1982 when Sanchez wanted him, I think he would have won this fight even at lightweight. Sanchez was a swift and slick boxer that could give Arguello problems moving side to side. He also had a terrific chin, no matter how big of a puncher Arguello was.

At featherweight, I think the 70s version of Arguello would have a better chance BUT, Sanchez (circa 1980-82) would have beaten him still. Much faster, more ring generalship and more stamina, IMO than Arguello. Arguello used to set you up when you was in front of him, but SLICK BOXERS always gave him PROBLEMS. Ernesto Marcel beat him on points using his lateral movement. Vilomar Fernanadez did the same also, so did the great Aaron Pryor. Sanchez used to time you up when you came to attack him. He simply used to go down when you attack and then come up and give combinations.

One thing for sure, BOTH OF THEM HAD EXTREME CONFIDENCE AND CONCENTRATION. Probably the best concentration of all time. And for sure, this one would have been a WAR...Sanchez by split decision.

I'll take Arguello simply because we never saw Sanchez at 135.Alexis would've been the hardest puncher that Sanchez faced, including Gomez and Lopez, and it was 15 rounds in those days,a long time to out box a guy, although slower, was taller, almost impossible to hurt, had a good jab,and was always in great shape. He wasn't a face first brawler like Lopez or a dumbass, come in 4 pounds overweight Gomez. He was a stand up boxer who knew the value of the jab and was a great inside fighter. He could be out boxed,no doubt, but with Alexis's physical advantages and ability to knock you out with either hand he would be my pick at 135.
