its the reason why their punditry and presentation descends into the growling forced
shouting and table stomping crap we get so often........jim watt is the only one who can remain objexctive and say for example so and so looks to be domestic level but he may improve...

in cricket and football there is patriotism but none of this crap with the sky teams......of course the bbc and itv football pundits do have this problem hence that ccunt hanson last year and townsend talking of what a great number england were going to do to germany and hanson callinng the german team very average even after the demolition

I have only seen a few RTE fights, but their commentators are even worse. Go watch Dunne-Cordoba to see what I mean.

I agree with mugabi that Jim Watt is usually pretty objective (one of the best in boxing, imo), but yes, overall there is a lot of partisan stuff coming from the Sky team.

The "great" Jimmy Magee commentates on RTE and you are correct, he is terrible. He is so biased I cringe everytime I watch a fight he commentates on. He usually has Dave McAuley beside him who is OK.

He recently commentated on Casey-Rigondeaux and he came out with two crackers:

"Casey was hit by a tsunami and that tsunami's name was Rigondeaux" (nice choice of words considering what had happed in Japan a week previous)

"We have two southpaws and two Willies in the ring" (Playing on the fact that Guillermo is supposedly Spanish for William)

they have to promote our produce or tv would not bother televising the domestic scene & just focus on the worldwide scene.

i think it would be fairer to give fans a beytter & greater insight & not try & pull the wool over so blatantly.

I'm Irish and yet I will admit that some of our boxing commentators are embarrassing.

I don't always agree with the opinions of the studio panel but you have to respect the usual line-up of Jim Rock, Bernard Dunne and Mick Dowling. They know their stuff, at least they were boxers and understand what a fighter has to do to succeed.

There is no denying that Dave McCauley is a good commentator with a lifetime of boxing experience but Jimmy Magee and Darragh Moloney have not got a clue.
Magee is a field sport fan at heart and consistently refers back to hurling, gaelic football and rugby matches, I hate that because there is no comparing a field sport with boxing.
Darragh Maloney is the total opposite to what a boxing commentator should be. He knows nothing about the fight game, comes across as being as soft as shit and a bit gay. There is no comparing them with a real boxing commentator like Steve Bunce.

I would make one small defence for RTE commentary, that is that 10 years ago pro boxing was basically non-existent in Ireland. There were no promoters, hardly any Irish pro boxers based in Ireland (just a handful based in the UK and the US). The depth of knowledge in the media is shallow as a result. Collins revived things a little, but it didn't take off until Bernard Dunne came back from the USA.
