Pseudonym and boxers record's

Post by worrypascanada »

Hello again,

In my research on Yvon Durelle, I had many discussions with one of his great buddy, friend, and sparring partner named Norman Gautreau. As I have learned many things with Normie, I realize that boxer's in Durelle era could fight under a different name in order to defy regulations of the time. For example, Normie went under different names in his fighting career: Normand Gauthier, etc. Most of the time, it had a relation to the boxer, for example he could have taken his mother maiden name, instead of Gautreau. All of this was to defy a regulation that a boxer had to wait so many weeks before embarking in the ring. The foundation of this regulation was medical. These false names permitted them to keep on boxing without being reprimanded by boxing associations.

I suspect that many bouts, which fighters went under a pseudonym, will be hard to connect with specific boxers records. So, the reality is even less than the BoxRec.com reality of boxers record's. Durelle is not known to have fight under a pseudonym. One of Yvon Durelle brothers has fought under a card in Quebec, Canada, under Yvon Durelle identity. Yvon could not attend this boxing gala, so Yvon brother was sent over to take his place. Like Normie has said to me, they needed to fight in order to make a living and pay expenses.

I don't have all the facts on hand at this moment. I am writing this email from work.

This email is not to condemn fighters or lessen BoxRec.com gigantic ring record project, but merely to raise the topic.

Best of day.

Robert Richard
