Interesting reading.
I noted many posts refer to "The Freak" as we knew him. Ron Beekin..
What a great bout Tony Mundine snr and Beekin would have been.
Ern McQuillan was too smart and avoided Beekin.
Mundine was to meet the winner of the Ron Beekin v Kahu Mahanga fight , Beekin put the STOP sign on the undefeated record of Mahanga by thrashing him. So Mundine thought he would avoid a battering from Beekin and went in with the loser Mahanga..Got KO'd anyway by Mahanga.
It was a crime that McQuillan had it all tied up.
For the record , When McQuillan had virtually purchased the Australian Middleweight Title for Mundine , Tony was rated by the Magazines as NO 6 in the Commonwealth.
RON BEEKIN was rated NO 1.. -- Draw your own conclusion.

Re: boxing
I knew Ron slightly, we were both trained by Bernie Hall. Mundine did not hold the Australian title when Mahanga beat him. English born Billy Choules held the title.
Bernie Hall had a handshake agreement with Choules' manager for Choules to defend against Beekin, but Ernie McQuillan got him to sign a contract to fight Mundine after Mundine beat Choules in a non-title fight.
Never trust a Pommy or his manager.

Re: boxing
Did ron beekin ever fight for a world title or fight the likes of carlos monzon, tony mundine is one of australias best and didnt have any title handed too him as you suggest.
Re: boxing
Only the national champion got a shot at a world title at that time. Ron was frozen out by Stadiums Ltd from fighting for the national title.
Tony Mundine was a great fighter, but there were Australian fighters he should have fought that he did not. Ron Beekin and Charkey Ramon were two that I
knew.

. Boxing's a joke now days Brute....Most have lost interest, and it's been destroyed by the on going avoiding the logical top contender. I'm ashamed at some of the helpless souls Mundine Jnr has had served up to him.... His father went up a division to avoid some good middleweights.
Can't agree he was a great fighter ....Canvas back too many times and thats where Beekin would have put him too.
As you were probably aware , Ron Beekin didn't help himself in the latter half of his career with frustration driving him to the night life .
Ron suffered brain damage in a gang attack on him in a NZ Pub about late 1975...I was very close to Ron and family ...Had a talk to his son Brett [ boots] not so long ago as he was interested in his Dad's early days . When Brett he was very young ...Ron died in May 2003.

..
. Whats the big deal about laying down in a sparring session with Monzon.
He got beaten 15 times ..In a career of hand picked opponents [ just like his son] .. Is that great.
Talk about Dave Sands and u will be onto greatness.
Re: boxing
I remember his brother Bob, who had a car yard in the Cabramatta area, telling me about Ron being bashed in New Zealand. He was mistaken for Bobby Dunlop who at the time was bodyguard for a major criminal. Ron was a pretty heavy drinker even when he was at his best. Mundine was a skillful boxer with a glass jaw. Monzon did not lose a fight after his 22nd birthday. Losing to him was no disgrace.maccamax wrote:.Brute wrote:Only the national champion got a shot at a world title at that time.
