So everyone who knows him says but he doesn't come across that way when he engages with people publicly or when he convincingly gets beaten by a fellow professional and old friend of his brothers...needs to try harder methinks.

Look I make music for a living and my mate has a great quote..
"never hang out with fans for too long, after a half hour they think your an asshole..an hour later they think they can make better music than you"

Cut the guy some slack, he's a grouchy dour faced scouser who's juts had his ass handed to have on national telly, I mean ffs, what else do you want from him?, a blowjob?, his first born?

^ well said , totally agree. Boxers come on here to give input and alot of the time ppl turn on them and become cheeky
It puts boxers off interacting with fans, boxers don't fight for fans they fight because winning or competing gives them a buzz
Having said that there is some bell end boxers , as in all walks of life, but if they don't want to be nice they don't have to perhaps you came across the wrong way on twitter.

It is hard to come across well for Smigga at times he has a lot of people waiting to pounce on every word he posted and constantly knocking him down. Everytime I have been onvolved in posts with him, he has been sound and really knows his stuff.

PS, I think Jim Watt has started to chat a lot of shit recently. Sometimes I think I am watching a different fight with what he is saying. Still a legend though.

Having an appreciation of something is different and almost unrelated to having an ability to do something.

As Mourinho says - you don't need to have been a Horse to be a Jockey...

Smith seems like a normal person, by which I mean you are as likely to catch him on a good day as a bad one, it seems.

Whenever I spoke to him, the main characteristic I took from it was that he was in the main polite, but utterly unwilling to concede a point or admit another perspective may be equally valid.

Compared to some people on here, he was a delight to talk to.
Compared to others on here, it was a fruitless, barren discussion.
On balance, I'd rather have him posting than not.

Come on lefty, he could be worse. I mean, he could start random threads questioning the sexual preferences of boxers, for example.

'Needs to try harder'? To do what exactly? Make anonymous people on a forum happy?

Jon Saxon has hit the nail on the head - and I see you've already acknowledged this.

No its the way he goes about talking to people which i have an issue with,I have no problem with people not liking my opinion but theres no need to be rude! The guy hasnt exactly shown a whole ton of humility.Look at how he reacted to the Degale defeat,he didnt concede he lost to the better man even if was just on the night! He decided to say Degale couldnt punch and he's nothing special, blah, blah, blah. You also have the fact that he seems to fall out with alot of the guys he fights.

To be fair lefty many competitive and ambitious boxers need to get a bit of needle going to give them the extra push. Some people do not have the natural aggression to have a basis to build the 'needle' on; Smith does; I know people who would rather pull their chest hair out than admit their 'wrong' or concede a point of view. We watch the sport week in and week out. The boxers are in it every day, for years and years. They have young n's coming on and trying to knock them out. Paul and Stephen Smith always seemed to enjoy putting their point on. Paul did come across as being more 'straightforward' in his arguments and responses etc. I got the impression that he was very comfortable with who he was and he weren't that arsed about 'making new friends' on a boxing forum. 'We' can't get on our high horses about boxers taking criticism personally when 'we' do exactly the same.

I can understand him not coming on here anymore; boxing is his day job and he's been at it for years. He must need something else to keep him sane. I'm a window cleaner and enjoy my job but I wouldn't post everyday on a window cleaning forum coz it'd crack me up if someone I didn't know had strong opinions about my abilities and qualites.

Smith did get beat by DeGale in a fair fight; he would have shown a different side to his character if he'd accepted that and praised DeGale as a very good boxer. There are many boxers though who do not want to publicly admit such a thing. I'll watch Smith box again; it'll be good to see if the shift in gyms does him good + I am really looking forward to Stephens' rematch with John Simpson. :)

So ??? why bother with him then ?
