The last 100-fight fighter
Would we see a boxer today fighting 100 fights? It looked like guys like that is an obsolete type of fighter now days.
Why we don't have fighters with 100 fights no more?
I want to read your opinions, please.

There are some, the reason there are less is simple. Money... Sugar ray Robinson would have gladly fought 2 or 3 times a year for 40 or 50 million dollars.

Re: The last 100-fight fighter
There are a handful of journeyman types who have over 100 fights who are active. JC Chavez was the last elite fighter to have over 100 fights. Before him Emile Griffith.
And yes, the reason we don't see that anymore is financial. Why fight 5-10 times per year if you can make a comfortable living fighting 2-4 times per year? Or at the real elite level, one fight per year?

I'd squeeze Duran in there between Emile & Chavez.

Did Duran make the century? Wasn't sure off the top of my head.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:I'd squeeze Duran in there between Emile & Chavez.
Chavez probably was the last elite one, yes.
Re: The last 100-fight fighter
Jorge Castro.
Toney isn't far off but will probably never get there now.
MAB has 75, which is a pretty large number when you look at it in this day and age. Same with Castillo.

Wongjongkam has 84. Pretty damn high for a guy who's been fighting at the Championship level for 10 years.
Re: The last 100-fight fighter
A lot of filler though that aren't championship level or title fights.Diamond WEAPON wrote:Wongjongkam has 84. Pretty damn high for a guy who's been fighting at the Championship level for 10 years.
Re: The last 100-fight fighter
You would get the same with any "old time" fighter, lot's of keep busy fights or over the weight fights. It's one of the comments that McCallum made about his trainer(s), that they would want him to keep busy with over the weight fights, old school style.Scottrf wrote:A lot of filler though that aren't championship level or title fights.Diamond WEAPON wrote:Wongjongkam has 84. Re: The last 100-fight fighter
I know, just commenting that X number 'at championship level' is a bit misleading.
Re: The last 100-fight fighter
Oh, yeah, for sure. I think the only guys that are going to get near 100 these days are some Mexicans who turn pro at 13 or whatever and churn them out. Once they get to "star" status or banged onto PPVs like JCC Jnr, they fight less frequently, as he has done since getting to that point (only one fight in 2010).

I just noticed something interesting. Monzon's and Griffith's last fight was on the same card. It was Monzon's 100th fight.dempseyfire wrote:There are a handful of journeyman types who have over 100 fights who are active. JC Chavez was the last elite fighter to have over 100 fights. Forgot about Duran.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:I'd squeeze Duran in there between Emile & Chavez.
Yes Campas has over 100 fights but I wouldn't classify Yory-Boy as 'elite'

I remember watching him fight Chavez. He had some talent.
Didn't Buck Smith crack 200 fights?

Benji Singleton had over hundred losses let alone fights. Last one a couple years ago.
