Ralph "tiger" Jones

Post by BrocktonBlockbuster49 »

When they mention legit middleweight contenders of the 50's, tiger jones fails to get mentioned which is probably because of his record 52-32. he did however record a win that not many fighters could say they have. He beat a out of his prime but still dangerous and great 33 year old sugar ray robinson. I know it was his 2nd fight after a 3 year layoff so that may have been the reason. but still no ordinary journeyman beats sugar ray, and it looks like Tiger Jones was a lot better than his record indicated. He also had a great trainer in gil clancy.

so can anyone tell me what they know about tiger jones???? was he a boxer or power puncher?? i have read about him but never seen him fight.

Tiger Jones was a great slugger, fought everyone there was hence the rather erratic record. You could compare him in style perhaps with Emanuel Augustus in some ways... a slugger with good technical skills and a great chin. I have Jones first fight with Kid Gavilan and its a real humdinger with Gavilan winning but having a tough time. Shame Jones never got a title shot if he was around today he'd definately be a champion. :box:

Truly is a shame that he never got a title fight, even after beating Robinson.
