what's happened to our boxing bible ?
what's happened to our boxing bible ?
I have been reading bn since the early 50's and my father before me. It was once the trusted bible of the trade which everyone in the trade read and had experienced boxing people running it. Todays new format is like a kids music magazine but then the magazine is now run by kids without the knowledge or any boxing experience whatsoever.
Bob Mee should have been made editor and these youngsters should have served an apprenticeship under him.
Please tell what experience Tris Dixon has had as a boxing journalist and writers Danny Flexen, John Dennen and Matt Christie.
At least Daniel Herbert has been around a long time. If someone was brave enough to bring out a real trade paper it would bury this pop mag.
At least the racing post is still a racing paper.

There's nothing like sensible, considered debate and this is indeed nothing like it. I think you will find Tris has been writing about boxing professionally for almost 10 years. As we are all in our late 20s and early 30s we are hardly kids. Claude Abrams joined BN at a younger age than all of us, as did Dan Herbert. You may not like the new look but it would be nice to receive constructive feedback rather than personal vitriol.
Re: what's happened to our boxing bible ?
just sat down to read it looks good, but it takes time to get use to. A couple of more weeks of the new boxing news and will have something to say. Flex good luck on your new job, will you still be going to boxing shows

Is the new format 'that' bad? I've not got the latest edition the last one I had was two weeks ago and that format was just fine.
Re: what's happened to our boxing bible ?
I quite like it personally
As long as the writing is good, which it is then the format for me is secondary.

Occasionally if I can hang a Fighting Fit article off it. But for BN it'll just be a few features etc now and againdazzer wrote:just sat down to read it looks good, but it takes time to get use to. Its ok, move with the times etc.
One thing i noticed is that rubbish fights like Adamek v McBride get the full page preview, and we all know about those fighters and how the fight will go.
but the excellent 3 world title bill in Japan is given a small preview, these are the boxers i want to know more about.

Still getting used to it myself but if it still gives the same great features & reviews then it will do for me.

I have yet to see it. But I am old school..... so do fear the new look a bit.
I quite liked the way it looked.....
I would prefer a few older writers

I looked at the cover on facebook and actually really like the cover...
Re: what's happened to our boxing bible ?
Not had a proper look through this weeks yet.
But so far. I think Tris Dixon is making a very good job of the paper. Some really good writers onboard, and good pieces by guys I like in the sport. Bob Mee, Teddy Atlas etc.

Instead of Mosley *yawn posing well oiled there should be a shot from the biggest fight of the weekend which I supposecould have been Segura battering Calderon or how about Murray getting brusied up by the Spaniard.
It's important to showcase the most well matched, awesome performance or surprising result rather than just having the usual suspects on the cover.

No it's not I'm afraid. As with any business, it's important to have a cover that's going to sell well. Every magazine publisher will have access to historical data letting them know which type of covers perform best on the newsstand and that will inform their choices accordingly. Choose the wrong cover and you can wipe thousands of pounds off your bottom line in one fell swoop, which no-one can afford to do.Final round wrote:Instead of Mosley *yawn posing well oiled there should be a shot from the biggest fight of the weekend which I supposecould have been Segura battering Calderon or how about Murray getting brusied up by the Spaniard.

Re: what's happened to our boxing bible ?
Deserter makes a fine point but also, Segura-Calderon and the Murray fight featured neither "awesome performances" (Giovani was good but simply repeated what he had already done, only quicker) nor "surprise results". Both favourites won in in what were mid-level fights, the only mild surprise being Murray going the distance. Mosley is involved in the biggest fight of the year so far, albeit as the B side. It had to be him, Khan or Morales.Final round wrote:Instead of Mosley *yawn posing well oiled there should be a shot from the biggest fight of the weekend which I supposecould have been Segura battering Calderon or how about Murray getting brusied up by the Spaniard.

Re: what's happened to our boxing bible ?
The point I'm trying to make is those fighters were active last week, Mosley wasn't, surely he'll make the cover again when he gets his over the hill arse handed to him on a well paid plate.dbflex wrote:Deserter makes a fine point but also, Segura-Calderon and the Murray fight featured neither "awesome performances" (Giovani was good but simply repeated what he had already done, only quicker) nor "surprise results". Ok like Desrter says having a well known Face posing on the cover everyone knows might sells well so I'm wasting my time with this but I think nothing works better than a good action shot, punch of the fight, picture of victorious fighter vanquished fighter in background etc The last issue I bought was Vitali standing over Solis that sort of cover tells people what big fight happened in the last week and makes you want to read about the ins and outs if you didn't catch it.
Talking Mosley I loved the aftermath of the Margarito fight cover 'Time Machine' wicked title with Mosley landing hard.
anyway if it aint broke why fix it I thought the format was nice before..
Re: what's happened to our boxing bible ?
I think we are lucky to have a weekly trade paper like BN at all - just look at the States.
Its got to be kept modern and fresh and the reality is that the photography is at least as important as the prose (whatever people say on here). With these caveats:
- the contents page design doesn't fit with the rest of the magazine and is dated
- it is arguable that the photos of domestic and European fights have been shrunk slightly - a mistake
- they still can't label pie charts properly
I'd say the new design is great

Re: what's happened to our boxing bible ?
Back in day they didn't have the internet for information. All the 'news' in Boxing News is published way before their latest issue on the internet anyway. I actually prefer to pay for Boxing Monthly because I'd rather read proper articles about boxers/promotors/trainers rather than news that I've already seen online.
