New Rules?

Post by Atom Bomb »

Dad just mentioned to me that the AIBA announced something about removing headguards. Checked it up on the net and apparently after 2012 there's to be a new scoring system, which holds each judge accountable for their scoring. REMOVAL OF HEADGUARDS - which is going to be pretty controversial. and Prize money.

Anyone hear about this?

I can confirm that there will be a new computer scoring system, which theoretically goes into effect this year (however we've yet to receive the updated software).
It's less about 'holding each judge accountable' per se, but doing away with the one second window in which all judges had to respond for the blow to count.

Please see my post from a few months back for more details on this:

I haven't heard anything regarding headgear going away, although the WSB boxers were 'semi-pro' in that they didn't have headgear and many of the rules were similar to professional boxing.

As for prize money, I know USAB did make a rule change to allow boxers to raise money via sponsorship or something similar. I don't recall the details, and I'm not sure that applies to prize money, but they did change some of the financial rules surrounding what boxers were allowed to do. Check this out on the usaboxing.org under the rulebook section.

Not sure if that answers your question precisely, but at least it's more information.

Cheers, I was a bit suspect at first, but in honesty I like the sound of these changes. More of an improvement than anything.

Rule 12.3.1 of the official AIBA Technical and Competition Rules - effective from 24 March 2011 - states: "Any coach active in professional boxing shall not be allowed to be a coach and/or second in both AIBA and/or WSB [World Series of Boxing] competitions... unless the coach resigns from any involvement in professional boxing for a period of at least six months...".

Except that.

Is this some kind of move to keep people in amatuer boxing?
